Welcome to Canada. Okay so what you need to understand is that if you see a link to "the Walrus" that's a real news article but if you see a link to "the Beaver" that's a fake news article
@mcc
Do they call The Walrus "Wally" for short?
@dlakelan No we call it the Walrus

@mcc

Missed opportunity I guess. 😅

@Crazypedia @mcc eh, reality and satire are basically the same these days.

@mcc we have something similar in australia. "the betoota advocate" is fake news (usually comedic but (mostly*) left wing) and the "nt** times" is ""real"" news (usually comedic but right wing).

*they've done at least 1 article that i know of that's very bigotted

**northern territory. 1 of the 8 major states/territories that make up australia the country

@mcc and don’t forget The Narwhal (real) 😊
@thenarwhal
@mcc
I get all my news from The Howler
@mcc As for me, I see the Beaverton as a valuable purveyor of news that must first be sifted for ironic humour. Your klicks per Litre may vary.
@mcc Don't forget the Narwhal is also real news somehow
@mcc makes sense... more tusk = more veracity. this is why i only believe news i read on mastodon too

@mcc I wish This Is That was still on CBC - the bilingual dog episode was classic

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/no-dogs-don-t-have-to-be-bilingual-in-montreal-1.1191892

No, dogs don't have to be bilingual in Montreal | CBC News

A fictitious story about a controversial Montreal bylaw proposal requiring dogs to be comfortable in the country's two official languages has rippled through the realms of social media and fooled even some seasoned news sites.

CBC
@rhempel @mcc This Is That convinced my stepmom of all sorts of things, because she couldn't recognize it was satire
@giflian @mcc I will admit to occasionally forgetting what time it was and listening to a story in disbelief for a few minutes before I figured out what was going on :-)

@mcc How dare you accuse the Beaverton to be fake news !

Like its US counterpart The Onion and long ago predecessor the Weekly World News, The Beaverton is a serious news outlet with headlines like:

Carney says he supports US invading Iran, Cuba, and possibly Canada “with some regret”

Danielle Smith uses notwithstanding clause to run red light

Quebec legislators brainstorming ideas for which religion to scapegoat next

@jfmezei @mcc When Meta banned links to news for Canadian users, somehow The Beaverton got included and had to run a whole campaign to explain they were a joke site
@mcc Walruses are VERY serious animals.
@mcc and the Rhinoceros is, somehow, both.
@mcc In my time in Canada I have not heard of this The Walrus
@brainsoup They're not super prominent they're like a Canadian Mother Jones or Atlantic or something
@mcc I feel just a little bit more Canadian today
Not a flattering comparison imo
@mcc @PapyrusBrigade and The Beaverton is our "The Onion," so beware satire.

@mcc
What about the Sealion?

I keep asking, but you don't answer!

@mcc thanks for tip. I'll shave the beaver, from my feed.
@mcc OK, the Beaverton is satire, but so spot-on that you have to look twice. There's comedy gold in thar!
@mcc or The Tyee (my Mom caught a real one off Campbell River back in the '40's) @thetyee

@mcc

And don't forget the Narwhal! @thenarwhal they are awesome too!

@mcc Goo goo g' joob?

@mcc and The Owl is real news too, but for kids…
😂

OWL (magazine) - Wikipedia

@mcc welcome to Canada, where we have a tradition and an appreciation for satire that helps to address fake news.
