Does anyone have a specific OS recommendation for a Linux beginner (A few weeks with Linux Mint, learning basic terminal commands) to use for their first home server setup?
My goal is to back up photos and phone data, and start building a music library for self hosted streaming.

#linux #linuxMint

@ScatteredShadows Mint is based on Debian/Ubuntu, so if you're sticking with Mint it might make sense to go Debian or Ubuntu Server if you want something that works similarly.

A lot of basic commands are the same on most Linux distros, but being able to have the same package manager between computers would probably be nice.

@nieuemma I am hoping to get familiar with a few different distros over time, but you're right that it makes sense to stay in the family for now, while I'm also learning the basic concepts of server use and maintenance.
Thank you!

@ScatteredShadows I am very happy to help. Life is worth nothing if you're not kind to yourself and others.

If you're interested in other distros, I'd say eventually look into ArchLinux because its not as scary as people think! There's even the "archinstall" command that gives you a menu with options, so you no longer have to do everything manually with individual terminal commands.

I keep going back and forth. I really like NixOS but sometimes it just doesn't have what I want and Arch does, and I don't always have the effort to learn how to make NixOS work.

Both of these distros give me a sense of freedom and control. I like that they don't give me a bunch of stuff (which is also what some people really don't like). It means that if I want to set up a server to do something specific, I don't have extra pre-installed stuff that I don't want running or taking up space.

I think Linux Mint is my favourite for just having a working computer for daily use though.

@nieuemma Very true!

I definitely want to take on Arch linux eventually. I just put Mint on a laptop that wouldn't even boot with windows anymore, and I am thrilled that it is going well. I'm trying to get my hands on another laptop to experiment with different distros, and then switch my new laptop once I'm really comfortable.

@ScatteredShadows obviously depends on your use case, but I would stay away from rolling release distros for a server application. Debian is very solid in this regard! Let us know how it goes!
@Xionical That definitely makes sense! I'll keep posting :)
