Linux in California is in deep trouble.

PeerTube
@gbryant my inner hoarder has me downloading some isos to my #copyparty server, just to be safe.
@gbryant I'm getting tired of being right when I wish I was wrong... Remember when I said that if #Microsoft doesn't care much about making #Windows unusable it must mean that they know something we still didn't know?
@gbryant Don't you mean California is in deep trouble when all tech jobs that run Linux on their PCs move away from the state because of that law? šŸ˜‰
@gbryant imo the os provider is the… incompetent wording of ā€œOS age assurance frameworkā€ rather than that one guy maintaining your niche distribution. Yeah, it’s really written poorly. AI could’ve helped them word it in a way it at least makes the sense the intend lol
@gbryant thank you for making your videos. I will make a post about it.
I expect to see this go to court any day now. There's too many corporations that are going to fight this. I don't even see how they could enforce this? Does my fridge OS need age verification now???
@[email protected] Some of them probably lobbied for this to get rid of competition for Windows, macOS, iOS, and stock Android.
@mrfunkedude Not sure, but traffic lights run operating systems. Somebody needs to go type their age into those.

@mrfunkedude Bonus:

ā€œ(2) (A) A developer that receives a signal pursuant to this title shall be deemed to have actual knowledge of the age range of the user to whom that signal pertains across all platforms of the application and points of access of the application even if the developer willfully disregards the signal.ā€

Based on my understanding, a user whose age is marked as 21 shall be deemed to have actual knowledge of the age range of the user to whom that signal pertains across all platforms. Thus, if you tell your OS that you’re 21, you should be allowed to order alcohol and have it shipped to your house, with no additional information. Age verification is a two-way street.

I’m sure they won’t allow that, though.

This law and others like it were pretty much just created to reinforce a monopoly, because the only platforms that can realistically comply with this as they're closed or mostly closed ecosystems are Windows, macOS, iOS, or stock Android, and this will be unenforceable on Linux, BSD, Illumos, and AOSP.
This is just an attempt to lock down the internet.
@gbryant great video. A lot of good points. To me it seems that if they are really interested in protecting children they should be focusing on the entities that are actually creating the things they want to protect them from (ie: adult websites, information brokers, etc.). This seems like such a "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" move to me. Mandating by law to collect information from computer users. Insane.
@gbryant Any Linux developers should resists and ban California just like some BSD. Because I don't want them to collect my ID just for connecting to internet and assign my data. And I believe NO ONE WANTS IT. It harms Muslims, LGBTQIA+, Arab supporter, and everyone oppressed.

@gbryant It's just ironical Ubuntu immediately comply to this and proposed a fredesktop protocol for "Age Verification." Nope, it's ID verification, not age verification.

@gbryant I have created a petition. Not sure how effective it will be and I've never done anything like this before but felt I needed to do something. Please sign, share, tag, etc: https://c.org/Cg6LRGbHBS
