What's the largest number of "trusted partners" you've seen in a cookie consent pop-up?
@Edent pretty certain I saw one the other day which was high 900s.
@Edent I can do 966 from outlook.com...
@tomh @Edent wait, is was 6xx two years ago, if I remember correct.
@Edent Grupo Prisa, owner of El País, the biggest newspaper in Spain: 980
@Edent
And by 711, they are not referring to the chain of stores? 😮
@Edent I found one the other day claiming only 6 ... Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Cloudflare. Then I tried to register an account, and they requested KYC via Persona. I had to email their support team to get them to delete the account in the end, because I couldn't do it myself ... So does that count as "over 1000"? :-)
@Edent a lowly 931 here, but then this is my TV where I typically wouldn’t expect an awful lot of tracking…
@Edent We need a leaderboard of trust
@Edent is there a law that says you have to give a number? If so, it seems like a bizarre requirement (I might want to know specifically who my data is being shared with, but I care not how many). If not, why do they do it?
@steve @Edent it's part of the https://iabeurope.eu/transparency-consent-framework/ so everyone who implements that flow ends up doing it
TCF – Transparency & Consent Framework - IAB Europe

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force on 25 May 2018, changed the data privacy landscape in Europe. GDPR was designed to harmonise data privacy laws across Europe, giving individuals greater control and transparency over their personal data while raising the bar for businesses to achieve lawful…

IAB Europe
@Edent got a 1,875 once, though i didn't screenshot it
@Edent blind (yes, it's horrible, I know) just showed me 1,578
@Edent 1467 from the Manchester Evening News
@Edent horrifying. But what is "legitimate interest" as distinct from other interest. I decline 'normal' cookies and then have to decline legitimate interest separately. The only legitimate interest I can ever think of might be the original website, and even then ...
What is the ‘legitimate interests’ basis?

@Edent looking at that I see many of these partners might claim legitimacy but I think many claims would clearly be very weak
@confusedMiddleAgedDad They are legitimately interested in selling your data
Quixoticgeek (@[email protected])

Attached: 1 image Have been noticing cookie pop ups with increasing and increasing numbers of "partners". This one is the new record I came across today. Beating the previous by 12. How the fuck does an organisation even properly vet 1637 partners to make sure they aren't evil? At least there's a reject all option. Anyone found a higher number of partners on a cookie pop up?

(void *) social site
@quixoticgeek @Edent Also something something legitimate interest
@Edent uBlock stopped counting after it reached 1,000. can't remember which site exactly, i was in such shock, but i think it was for the Vogue Mag website.

@Edent more importantly, WTF is ‘legitimate interest’?

Like, at the most basic level, shouldn’t all requests for data be based ok a ‘legitimate interest’?

@ttmevans @Edent https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/lawful-basis/legitimate-interests/what-is-the-legitimate-interests-basis/
And maybe they should, but 'consent' is another legal basis for data collection, which is why bad sites make consent easy and refusal clunky.
What is the ‘legitimate interests’ basis?

@mjr @Edent I know there’s a technical definition. But Jesus, just stop it already. No one wants that shit.

When a lawyer asked why one of my sites had no cookie notice, and I simply told her there were no cookies, she actively disbelieved me.

@ttmevans @Edent legal definition. Don't blame the technicians for this one !

And that lawyer's comment is a sad indictment of how bad things are now.

@mjr @Edent TBF, I don’t see what most people actually get from the cookie world. Ad revenues are near nothing unless you’re very popular. We used a bit of Plausible code to measure basic stuff, and frankly it was more than enough analytics.

And the kicker? Our (modest) social media spend had zero impact. But our (again, modest) traditional marketing, including print, was very effective.

Maybe it was different before, but it’s all enshittified to the extreme now.

@ttmevans @mjr @Edent

In what area is the business/shop? Interesting!

@C3nC3 @mjr @Edent that was a rural Internet business. Unfortunately Elon came for it and deployed his VC hammer. It’s hard to make money when your competition doesn’t need to think about profitability.
@Edent edge Browser: 941
@Edent 1111 in Corriere della Sera (which I regularly open in an incognito window 🤷🏻‍♂️)
@Edent 977 just yesterday. I’m in. Sounds lots more fun than collecting postal stamps.

@Edent more than that, but I've lost count. I always decline anyway...

They need to change the law so that by law, the default is all non essential are off and you have to turn them on one at a time by hand if you want them on...

@drajt you should write to your MP and suggest that.

@Edent that sadly won't work for two reasons:

1. He's a useless tub of lard.

2. While he is my "MP", I no longer live in the country in which he sits in the legislature, and my local-to-me MP will ignore me as a foreigner even though I pay plenty of tax for him to play with.

@drajt well then, I guess you need to either stand as an MP or accept that nothing will ever change.

@Edent I can't stand as an MP, see point 2.

I don't live in a country where I'm allowed a vote, and in the country where I live I'm denied the vote.

@Edent The highest I remember was 1174 on I think Oracle's support website.. haven't found a greater slut so far.
@Edent dict.cc is currently at 1578
@Edent Trick question. Thanks to uBlock Origin, I don't see cookie consent popups.
@Edent I caught a big one: 1708!
