Oh man, the #MacbookNeo is giving me pre-unibody 2008 #Macbook vibes. RESIIIIISST!!! — #microblogging #MicroToot: 84 characters

@rl_dane

Let me help you:
_$700 for 8GB of non upgradeable RAM_

That said, love the idea of fun and friendly machines coming back. Really looking forward to the death of depressing grey monoliths.

@OpenComputeDesign

Yes, and yes.

I'm not getting one, don't worry. XD

To borrow a phrase from my #Jacksonville friends:

#TTWD / #TTID (Thinkpad Till We/I Die) XD

@rl_dane I really would like to see computers get fun again.

Although, with the only color options being "The usual dystopian grey", "Not even as pink as a white shirt washed with colors", "Strange yellow", and "deathstar blue", they really still pale in comparison to the proper candyshop of colours you could get circa y2k. (Although, even then, woulda liked to see nice red and purple options)

@OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane
colorful transparent plastic was peak design :)

@kabel42 @rl_dane

Also, like, as poorly as plastic tends to age, aluminum is just as absolutely garbage material. It was really best left to soda cans, because that's really all it's good for.

@OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane let's go back to thinkspads with magnesium housing :)
although most are now covered with sticky black goo

@kabel42 @rl_dane

Magnesium really is the best. I've got some old dells with magnesium cases that have seriously taken some _wallops_ without any cracks or dings. Meanwhile aluminum laptops I've used have gotten dents and dings seemingly out of thin air :P

@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42

It is definitely the superior metal, and can be used as a signal flare in a pinch. XD

@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign

I bought a set of folding glasses only a few years ago (June 2019, to be precise) that have the same black rubber coating. (on the case, that is)

It's already sticky to the touch. :/

What do people do to remove the goo? Sandpaper? Solvent?

@rl_dane @kabel42

I've used a kitchen scrubbie, but ymmv

@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42

Ah, not a bad idea. Like steel wool? Or just a scouring pad?

@rl_dane @kabel42

iirc used one of these. Dunno if it was the best kind, but it's what I found under the sink :P

@OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane and terpentine(?), ideally from orange peels :)

@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign

Oh, like [Goo gone].

I have some of that at home. I'll try it.

Adhesive remover - Wikipedia

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign no idea, turpentine is supposed to make the stuff thinner so it can be removed, gelling agent sounds counterproductive

@rl_dane @kabel42

Because, old magnesium laptops are flat as a ruler, and old aluminum laptops are more curved than a banana. Old plastic laptops are often still in better condition than aluminum. Aluminum laptops are even still generally at least as prone to hinge problems as plastic ones.
