BREAKING: Senate vote on War Power’s Resolution fails 47-52

46 Dems in favor, 1 Nay (Feckless Fetterman)

51 GOP against, 1 Yea (Rand Paul, who co-sponsored the bill with Kaine)

It is absolutely unhinged that we even need a war power’s resolution to restate what is already explicit in the United States Constitution. Yet here we are. smh

@QasimRashid
Kind of impressive in a symbolic way when you look back on figures like Jeanette Rankin

The only Congress person to vote against both world wars

My favorite statue in the US Capital, “I cannot vote for war” 📜

@QasimRashid This is the Republican-Iran war. That point needs to be hammered home at every opportunity. This is not only Trump. It's the Republicans. Americans should all hear that message over and over and over again. Also it's the Republican-Inflation. It's the Republican-Economy. All of it. ON REPUBLICANS. They could stop this corruption and chaos and insanity and they choose not to. #USPol
@nomdeb say that all you want, but Americans, through action, inaction, and indifference to myriad sins at home and abroad brought this government and this war upon the world. You don't get absolution for not being a Republican. @QasimRashid
@Flux @nomdeb @QasimRashid You'll need this

@lackattack might be a broad brush, but no-one but Americans can fix America. @nomdeb @QasimRashid

Congress has the Power Of The Purse, so while the Präsident can declare a war, its financing has to be approved by Congress.

The real kicker: during war it is easier to declare a National Emergency - with the sweeping powers that come with it.
I'd guess: endless presidential term (no elections), oppression of opposition / dissidents, sweeping incarceration of enemies/foreigners, censoring, compulsory drafts, ...

I fear yet see paintings on the wall.

@QasimRashid AIUI Congress previously delegated a portion of their authority over acts of war to the president with the authorization for the use of military force, which is still in effect, so a new bill is needed to revoke that delegation of authority.

But they’ve been ignoring the constitution in so many other ways, it’s not clear that the bill passing would have been sufficient
