Future shock – Ceejbot's notes

Software development in the age of gen AI

@ceejbot we get signal! Main screen turn on!
@ceejbot did a quick skim and saw the “bicycle” comment. Now I’m intrigued and will have a pressing need to squirrel myself away somewhere in the office for $reading_time minutes this morning.
@ceejbot that’s an excellent read. I will need to read it again because _of course_ when I was 60% through the ol’ executive disfunction started spawning threads and distracted me a bit, but it’s given me food for thought which is really all I ask from writing.
@ceejbot Motorcycle of the mind?

@ben @ceejbot A motorcycle requires skill to drive but it has its own engine. A non-assistive bicycle, you provide both skill and motive force.

I mean, yeah I know motorcycle piloting takes stamina and strength beyond a car, but for me the bicycle is a more effective metaphor.

@thatdawnperson @ben I love the bicycle metaphor so much. You have to provide the motive power, but the gears amplify it. You have to choose a direction! Intention and drive still come from the human; the tool is still only a tool no matter how much mythic power we ascribe to it.

@ceejbot

I just read "Future Shock" book, and my biggest takeaway from it is that it predicts the rise of science-fearing fascists by no one making any effort to address the effects of massive change across everything.

@ceejbot the English major in me loves that the bicycle metaphor is woven through the whole thing, and then in the very last line you're like, "Now whip out your guitar and shred!!!"

OK OK there's an amplifier metaphor in there as well. I get it.

I loved this, thank you for taking the time to prepare it, to give it, and to share it. I've already waved it at the people I work with.

@literatesavant :D :D :D

I felt like being ABSURD at the end, I don't know why.

Sometimes I like breaking rules.

@ceejbot feedback from one of my colleagues: "Amazing read. A fantastic articulation of how I feel about it all that's written better than I could ever manage. I hope this gets all the attention it deserves."
@literatesavant Thank your colleague for me! Much appreciated <3
@ceejbot Is it just me, or the subject is a reference to Alvin's Toffler book?
@piero It is indeed a reference to that, as I explain a short ways in!
