Apparently there are rumours that Windows 12 is coming this year and will not only double down on Copilot, but introduce a subscription model for it, despite requiring an NPU.

I refuse to believe Microsoft is stupid enough to try the heated seats DRM trick.

@emilyyoung hellnews
:/
@DavidBlue @emilyyoung I think on the contrary that it's a good news that the most enshitty Windows becomes the most reasons people will have to use Linux instead.
@emilyyoung I believe they will be that stupid because "people need windows for their software to run".
@emilyyoung Nothing is stupid when you are a monopoly too big to fail, i'm afraid.

@theartlav @emilyyoung

when you are a monopoly too big to fail

Remember Nokia?

@emilyyoung I hope not but, I'm a happy Linux user so 🀷
@emilyyoung
Thankfully there are some really easy to install Linux distributions that can do exactly the same thing without forcefeeding cope eye lot on you.

Well if they want to commit actual suicide

Why should we stop them

At this point it feels like actual internal sabotage to get everyone to linux

@emilyyoung if at least, the deal is the β€œits’s free but enshitified and we use everything to train copi-slop or pay and you have a windows without any ad and everything stay private” model.

But nahhh, as any big corporation who need a lot of money to pay for the slop machine, the paid version will stay a enshitified and privacy nightmare.

@emilyyoung Don't worry people, just execute 1843 debloating scripts, and your pay-to-use OS is going to be as good as it used to be 15 years ago!
@Anibyl Until the next forced update.
@emilyyoung Honestly, at this point anything that involves Microsoft and stupid ways to make money seems plausible to me.
@emilyyoung My anniversary: 20 years without Windows. Totally. It's possible. Linux/Ubuntu!
@emilyyoung you vastly underestimate what they'll try to squeeze every penny out, especially of large orgs and govts (yknow, where money is basically a plaything)

@emilyyoung I almost hope they do

And everyone discovers what happens if you just don't pay your AI bill

@emilyyoung but what if it is πŸ€”

@emilyyoung https://www.pcworld.com/article/3068331/windows-12-rumors-features-pricing-everything-we-know-so-far.html is a nice roundup of the rumours. But we'll have to wait and see I'm afraid.

Converting the company over to linux is looking sweeter and sweeter. Not looking forward to explaining another 30 bucks per user per month surcharge to manglement

What clues reveal about a possible Windows 12

According to various rumors, Windows 12 is set to replace Windows 11 in 2026. We explain the chatter surrounding the new Windows version and its features, and what "Hudson Valley Next" and "CorePC" are all about.

@emilyyoung i find it incredible how some people will happily make everything worse for everyone

@emilyyoung been transferring all my windows desktop and onedrive files over to a home server in prep for switching to linux this week (lotta music and photos to organize in the process) so i really don't care what they do anymore. fam are either luddites or apple folk already so i don't have to even support it afterwards.

11 got so annoying, trying SO HARD to make AI happen, not to mention the basically-required-now ms account stuff and ads. Unlocking people's "encrypted" drives. Fuck MS. They even fucked up XBOX - when they were doing really well - by requiring unreasonable margins from the unit. It's all end-stage capitalism bullshit from every company, they're all trying to squeeze people that already have NO FUCKING MONEY.

Trying to rent people their computers back to them might actually be what gets people back into meatspace. With any luck, once everybody starts talking to one another again, they'll realize why everything sucks so bad now. Then the owners will have something to worry about besides margins and lines going up.

@emilyyoung thank you for the kick to the rear to actually talk to our programmer so I can get to work on our Linux support.
@emilyyoung Microsoft is absolutely stupid enough to do that. Everyone in charge is drunk at the wheel.
@emilyyoung I will never again underestimate how greedy a publicly owned corporation will get, or how much abuse people will tolerate to avoid having to put in the slightest bit of effort learning something new.
@emilyyoung that would be a tall order for Microsoft recently, I could see them doing it.
