Stupid Microsoft translation for today:

T-SQL function "sin" (aka sinus)

translated to German as "SÜNDE" (sin, the religious thing)
@Johann150 ... is sinus another accepted form of sine function? Because I know sinus as the cavity in the skull where the snot is kept. This is another layer of amusing in the context of the thread.
@iris i think i just confused them because german uses the same word for both

@Johann150 @iris both come from the Latin word "sinus" meaning "sac, bend, bosom". The mathematical term is a latin (edit: mis-)translation of an Arab transliteration of the Sanskrit "jiyā" word meaning "chord" or "bowstring" https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sine

German indeed uses "sinus" for the math function. No danger of mixing up the terms though, as the nose sinus is called "Nasennebenhöhlen" (=cavities next to the nose).

@moritz_negwer @Johann150 wait... so what are nostrils??

@iris @Johann150 Nasenlöcher, i.e. nose holes.

(sinus infection works out to a Nasennebenhöhlenentzündung = inflammation of the cavities next to the nose. Also great for scrabble if you can get all the Umlauts.)

@moritz_negwer @Johann150 26 letters! Doctor, there's an alphabet in my sinuses!
