I explained to him what was meant by “separate but equal.” There was a bookcase near where I was set up and I grabbed a couple books from the shelf. I put one in his hand.

Me: What do we have?
Him: Books
Me: Correct. Is the same book?
Him: No sir.

Me: Exactly. This is equality. We have the same item but the quality isn’t the same nor is it a 1 to 1 situation. That’s how it was for my parents and grandparents.

I went on to explain how at this point in history equity was the goal. It’s BEEN the goal.

It’s up to his generation to continue fighting for it.

Here’s the kicker: my campus is 99% Latino. I’ve explained the cultural parallels between our cultures and they’re usually surprised by that.

Big Mama = Abuelita
Chicken, rice, and gravy = arroz con pollo
Various remedies that don’t make sense but work happening on both sides.

The only difference between my last name being Hunter and Hernandez is where the ship dropped my people off.
