A thing that the #gameDad encouraged: lots of young people* very new to emulation who are now freaking out because the currently good ROM site is going down at the end of the month

the site in question came online in October 2022

ROM sites going offline is normal but this time there's an Unusual Amount of youngsters who don't know that it's normal because this is their First Time Ever and it's traumatic for them and, IDK, I kinda want to give them a hug and tell them it's all gonna be okay

(there's something extremely comforting about being able to tell a young person "It's all gonna be okay" and actually be 100% confident and correct in this one particular instance. That's kinda rare In These Something Times)

I don't know now, because I have downloaded so many ROMs in bygone eras that I don't look any more. I remember MAME as a hot new tool I learned about from a news story on go.com before the Mouse bought that Yahoo competitor. I remember daisy chaining ADB keyboards to play multiplayer Gauntlet on some PowerPC Mac running System 8.6 (at work!)

It all blends together after that

@ifixcoinops although you're almost certainly right, I can't help but feel that everything might not have been ok if it weren't for a small number of people panicking and downloading all the ROMs each time this happens.

@ifixcoinops we survived the deaths of zophar's domain, emuparadise and roms being shadily uploaded to cnet. The next generation has it tough because of how litigious Nintendo is being right now, but I believe in them

@Dio9sys @ifixcoinops emuparadise didn't die, it just got harder to use, especially for Nintendo titles. I got OoT from there last night. Idk where I would go if they died. Torrents most likely.
