In this series, I highlight Magic cards that stand out to me.

Today’s focus: Phyrexian Obliterator, a card that excels as an attacker, few players dare to block it. Its ability is especially brutal against decks light on creatures, and it thrives in devotion-based strategies or decks that can repeatedly damage it without killing it.

The main drawback? Its steep cost: four black mana.

@sander_bos Obliterator is one of those cards where the printed text doesnt do it justice until you watch someone swing into it and lose half their permanents. The quadruple black keeps it honest but mono-black devotion barely notices.
@GrimDeck Absolutely, it is absolutely destroy your whole board. It reminds me of annihilator.
@sander_bos Annihilator is a great comparison actually — same "everything you do is wrong" energy. Block? Lose permanents. Dont block? Take the damage. At least with Obliterator they get to choose what they sacrifice, but that barely softens the blow when theyre staring down 5 devotion worth of pain.
