Can we rewind to the 70s and start the fuck over, please?

Asking because I've got no other ideas at this point.

@mmiasma This means I will have to re-live my teen years. Please, for the love of all things holy, no.

@IanAMartin

Point taken. Still, enduring our really bad teen years may be the sacrifice we need to make to get the world back on track.

You're not alone - I will have to suffer through Disco a second time.

@mmiasma The place where things went bad was Kent State when government troops (okay, state level) fired live ammunition into students conducting a peaceful protest killing four and injuring others. Things never recovered.

@IanAMartin

Yeah. πŸ™

I was in the car with my mom the day after and the newspaper was sitting beside me. I was eight but I could read pretty well.

I saw the article and the students pictures. Mom said it was a bad thing but I shouldn't worry about it.

I think I did anyway.

@IanAMartin

Agreed. I think restoring from a 2015 backup, then iterating it forward until 'today' turns out sensible might be the way to go.

@mmiasma

@bytebro @IanAMartin @mmiasma

2015 is not nearly far enough. What brought the stupid timeline from 2016 onward had been installed decades before.

It would be a start though. Still very tempting tbh.

@axnxcamr

Sure. For a cleaner restart we'd probably need to go to about 1979 or 1980 - nip all that neo-liberal bollox in the bud right there, on both sides of the Atlantic.

@IanAMartin @mmiasma

@bytebro @axnxcamr @mmiasma Earlier yet would deal with Thatcherism, wouldn’t it? I know she was in office in 1986, but when did that start?

@IanAMartin

Fairly sure that was a 1979 election, which I believe was the first one I was old enough to vote in here (UK). She and her mate Ronnie Raygun have a great deal to answer for.

@axnxcamr @mmiasma

@bytebro @IanAMartin @mmiasma

Same here in Canada. The Liberal party went from center-left to center-right during those years, attacking unions and workers rights. He may not have been a neoliberal himself, but he did set the table for them.

@mmiasma 1971 to be precise, altho' perhaps 1968, That's when author Richard Peck said our demise began, when we stopped teaching delayed gratification in schools.

@geonz

We are not in the hands of any long-range planners, that's for damn sure.

@mmiasma

Yeah, I'm nostalgic for the whole, messed-up Cold War world of the '70s & '80s.

It sure is better than the sh*t going on now...
