The premature death of Trump --- by which I mean, Trump dying before his criminal trials are all finished and his civil fines are all paid --- would be a terrible thing.

What this country needs, what he owes us, is the opportunity to prove all his crimes in open court with sworn testimony, creating an undeniable permanent record. We have to be able to identify every corrupt act, every lie, and every accomplice, in the #InternationalCriminalCourt or some new tribunal.

@BlueDot I don't believe that will be possible without a military coup, a debilitating war where America loses, or an economic collapse where the wealthy lose everything. Maybe all three.

None of these countries needed coup, war, or economic collapse to solve their dictator problem.

South Korea's former president found guilty of rebellion and given life sentence over martial law

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life in prison for his brief imposition of martial law to suppress the opposition. The Seoul Central District Court on Thursday found Yoon guilty of mobilizing military and police forces in an illegal attempt to seize the liberal-led National Assembly, arrest politicians and establish unchecked power for a considerable time. Yoon is likely to appeal the verdict. Yoon fell from office after an ill-advised attempt to overcome an opposition-controlled legislature by declaring martial law and sending troops to surround the legislature on Dec. 3, 2024. A special prosecutor had requested the death penalty, saying Yoon deserved harsh punishment for the threat his actions posed to the country’s democracy.

@BlueDot None of these countries are ours. We don't have the political will (popular , judicial, congressional or state) yet to pull the GOP from power outside the ballot box, which looks like it will be denied to us in whole or in part this year.

But yes, there are examples. Just no likely local pathway here, without significant change on the ground.

@aka_quant_noir Well of course "significant change on the ground" is required. That's the change we need to make, and are making.

If you're telling me it'll be difficult, of course I agree. If you're telling me we're doomed, sorry, I have no time for it.

@BlueDot

I'm telling you I don't see a path where there isn't a lot of death, voluntary and imposed. I'm not saying we're doomed.
