What happened to the world’s largest CRT? One YouTuber went on a quest to find the last surviving Sony 43” tube TV, tracked down from one of only two known photos of the 440-pound behemoth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfZxOuc9Qwk

@andybaio I ripped the door lining of my car with a 27” tv trying to get it into the back seat. Blows me away that I have a 42” OLED on my desk along with a 34” LCD. I have photos of rolling a DLP tv down the sidewalk….
@steveriggins @andybaio I had maybe a 30" Trinitron and even that was so unwieldy I gave it away to someone who was willing to take it.
@andybaio we had a 32 inch CRT. They start to get heavy around that size
@Chancerubbage @andybaio We had a 74 cm Samsung "slim" 16:9 CRT. Weighted about 60 kg.

@jernej__s @andybaio

Our first ‘large screen’ a 50 inch
Rear projection, academy ratio, lived concurrently with the 32 inch CRT. It lived inside a honking big and heavy, compared to the electronics, wooden cabinet with swing away wooden doors.

@Chancerubbage

I can't safely carry our 32" upstairs from the basement, so it's sitting gathering dust until I can get help taking it 40 km to the electronics recycling at the dump.

@andybaio

@EricLawton @andybaio

I was younger and stronger when the CRT was new, but now even for one or two nearly as large (there is maybe a 30 inch upstairs) I’m going to use a dolly cart to get those down, and out.

I haven’t watched TV in 15-20 years, so they are just taking up space. I played console games on one.

@andybaio Holy wah! As a veteran of similar white-whale hunts (with hold-in-the-hands-sized prey, but still), I say massive respect to this guy.
@isocat @andybaio This gentleman is truly doing the lord's work. His tenacity and ability to stay positive is miraculous (well, he's a kid, so he can still be optimistic 😅 ). Really hoping he finds an "in" at Sony. Probably the best way is to pitch the story to Wired or somesuch, so that it's not HIM requesting the interview, it's Wired.
@SidFudd @andybaio @WIRED @WIRED or @arstechnica could probably make a go of it, I reckon.
@andybaio wow. I could haul my KV27 XBR50 around by myself, but always needed help moving my KV32 XBR200. All that glass gets heavy fast.
@andybaio incredible story, made my weekend
@andybaio @WiteWulf I used to deliver and install 36” Panasonic CRTs. Those things were heavy. Remember one bloke who had what you’d now call a man cave. Couldn’t get it up the spiral staircase in his garage. Had to reverse the delivery van under the window and get it in by standing on the roof.
