I have never worked in academia, but Iâve spent time around academics and have read plenty of emails in both academic and corporate contexts ⊠this particular one looks fake, even if the circumstances of plagiarism are common - this just not seem like how a thesis adviser would address this kind of plagiarism with a grad student
The way I read is that they forgot to cite sources, so technically itâs plagiarism. I didnât take it as a bad faith effort of passing off someone elseâs work as their own. Otherwise I would agree, I donât think theyâd treat the situation so flippantly.
I donât know, the line âat this rate, the only original part of this thesis is your nameâ implies the issue is not just failing to cite sources, but having no original thoughts or contributions - maybe itâs exaggeration for humorâs sake, but I definitely did not read this as simply forgetting to cite sources. Regardless, itâs so flippant and playful it feels like it was written as a joke, maybe even written to make a meme, hence it doesnât feel like a real email.

Itâs not âflippantlyâ - the reviewerâs opinion is there, and the whole message is just a âget your shit togetherâ, but in a more polite and ironical form. Itâs not an official or final review yet, but if I would receive it, Iâd get the idea of what happens when the paper is officialy submitted.

This one almost certainly isnât because of both the jocular tone and the several other âemails to Faithâ posted in this comm recently, but indeed they are drawing on the true experiences of graduate students.
it could be an internal organizational title, but it definitely doesnât sound like an academic position and not a part of a normal email signature either
Just to muddy the waters, I worked with a guy who had âsystem administrator level XIIâ in his email signature and one of the teammates asked him about it. His response was that he just put that in to see if anyone noticed and occasionally bumps the number up when he feels like itâs about time to do so.
So you never know when someone stuck a private joke into their email signature like that. Heck when I was brought back to my role I was never given a clear job title so I just put the most accurate job title I could think of in my signature of âIT Contractorâ

mercThe other thing to know about this is that itâs normally a good partnership. The driver has to trust the copilot to know whatâs coming up and to tell them in time. The co-driver has to trust the driver to drive fast without crashing. It takes a while to develop a partnership like that, and when itâs working well itâs amazing. The driver is basically driving what he can see plus what heâs told is ahead. If the co-driver says the road opens ahead, the driver will accelerate into a turn even if he canât yet see that itâs straightening out trusting that by the time he runs out of road the curve will be ending.
The Samir commentary sounds like two drivers paired for the first time, with the co-driver being the one who owns the car. Compare that to a team that knows what itâs doing.

I only have heard first hand accounts of school systems in a handful of countries in Africa (not Kenya, mostly west side) but consistently Iâve been shocked by either the severity of punishment for basically any form of failure or dishonor or for the prevalence of fear as the administrative motivator-of-choice. (One was just a few months ago I think in c/offmychest where a high schooler was describing their beatings for tardiness, bad grades, and other minor infractions. I think I commented on it.) Maybe sheâs for real?
