maybe my hand is now being forced on this to go ahead & create an account on this new local server/instance friendica.au, coz... this morning, once again, out of the blue my #opensocialspace instance is running like its electrons are swimming thru cold treacle. every interaction is s l o w, topped off just minutes ago by this outright service failure:

opensocial.space server was wonderfully responsive & reliable, but more lately, over the past several months, randomly several of these faults have beset it, which is sad.given i ofc already have this mostly*-lovely farcebook.space friendica account on the kind & generous Mel's private instance, logic would suggest i simply once more make it my daily fedi. that seems tempting especially since the relatively recent software upgrade solved almost all the initial problems. it's just that...
* the one remaining problem i've been unable to solve, is this tiny instance simply does not federate well with the large amount of #hashtags i follow, so heapsa posts i get in my Masto, Sharkey, & FriendicaOpensocialSpace accounts, just do not appear in my #farcebookspace timelines; rats.
my concern with trying the new strayan friendica instance is that if it's also only a small instance, maybe it also will federate poorly re tags, in which case... fryingpan/fire. alas, to state the obvious, if i don't try it, i'll never know. sigh [to nick the old NT tourism ad; if i never never go, i'll never never know].

Frank@msdropbear42 I just bought my own in the end, pretty simple to do and set up. And not expensive to run each month.
@VWDasher do you follow a large number of hashtags, & if so, does your private instance [= tiny, by definition] federate well with all said tags?
i believe that unlike me, many fediversers follow accounts, rather than tags, & so might never notice this problem even if on small servers. i follow both, with the tags aspect being really important for me.
If I was going to set up a new account and not on my instance I would go for the .au one ... The team that runs it's are great

in addition to my concern about whether it tag-federates well, there's also just the grind of knowing i'd need to start over again, not only in setting up yet another account with all my settings preferences, but more significantly, throwing myself at the feet of more admins to beg again that they pls install the desirable friendica addons [this new one lists only three, none of the "good" ones, so would be practically unusable for me if they didn't wanna add all the others you know about & were so kind to do for me], plus my nice custom #FOSSemojis . i always feel embarrassed to join an instance then immediately make myself a PITA to the admins by begging... but without the extra features, it's just not attractive for me to want to use. sigh.
@msdropbear42 I can't say I've tried it! @mastohost is my hosting co, they would know all about it and what's required yadda yadda. I follow a fair amount of tags on my weird.autos account but not many here at present.

well, it transpired that my erstwhile default daily #Friendica fedi, #OpensocialSpace, from which i write/send this post, remains my default daily Friendica fedi, coz:
- after a day or two, it seems to have come good again, with that latest bout of
The Wobbliesbehind it afaict - my oldest remaining Friendica instance, #AnonsysNet , sadly remains too frustrating to use as my daily, for reasons that originally sent me forth from it, a coupla years ago, in the endless quest for a better Friendica instance [eg, its most topical failing now, as always, is that the custom Channels i created in it (identical to those i create in all other Friendica instances i use), simply do not fetch ANY posts for the configured hashtags, & despite manual searches for those hashtags returning viable hits... grrrrrrrrrrr, tis so annoying!]. its Admin historically rarely/never replies to my posts.
- Mel's private instance #FarcebookSpace, remains great in all aspects except for the fatal flaw of just not federating well enough for most of my saved hashtag searches, either manual or Channels. every time i try to return to this instance as my possible daily, this unsolved hashtag PITA drives me away again. tis a pity!
- after much indecision, t'other day i did in fact press ahead & create a new account on the new Oz Friendica server, #FriendicaAU, full of hope & thrill. alas, subsequently disappointed, eg:
- the server refuses to accept my attempts to change the initial auto-generated password it sent me at registration
- its hashtag federation seems to be slightly better than FarcebookSpace, much better than AnonsysNet, but much worse than OpensocialSpace, ipso facto, untenable for daily use atm
- incomprehensibly, afaict, NONE of my attempted Outbound posts from it, actually transmit! they give an appearance of having Sent, but:
- two test-posts i sent to myself at some of my other instances, never arrived
- a post i sent to one of my Mutuals, who is active & responsive daily with my other instances, remains Unreplied-to [coz i suspect they never received it]
- a post i sent to the instance Admin, @wansti, remains Unreplied-to [coz i suspect they never received it]
oh well. 🤔🤷♀️

@MelissaBearTrix ta Mel, you're so kind! really appreciate it. i do keep coming back to it frequently, just in hope that whatever the "something" is that is stopping the tags federating properly, has decided to cut me a break, ha... + ofc whenever my main [current] Friendica falls over each time, it's comfy knowing i can then take up my whining & moaning from your place, whilst i await the wobbly one to come good again. options! 😀 @raroun @shlee @wansti @MsDropbear42

Just a heads up though: following tons of hashtags needs serious server muscle. If friendica.au is also small, you might hit the same limits there. It's not you, it's just resource-heavy for indie instances.

@raroun hi & thx for replying with the insightful info i'd not previously known / understood. now i feel pretty bad, belatedly realising that all this time it's been my fault, without ever knowing it! damn. prolly now i need to rethink my whole fedi approach, as the last thing i want is to be wandering around wreaking havoc on all the instances i try, & being a burden on all the admins. maybe even i should just give up on friendica & go back to mastodon, & just try to be happy with its UI + functional limitations? hmmm, much thinking to do now... 🤔🥺
