A rough cut, freehand with disk grinder. A #crochet hook for some chonky rope. This is tool #steel and will NOT bend (easily) :)
So I did a filing with a medium file, then a diamond file, then some 80 grit paper to smooth it out, decent results. I may cut more of the opening out to hold the rope better on pulling but this is workable.
I got a magic ring 6 done, working on the 2nd round with increases. This is very hard though and glad I am using this steel punch now! LOL It is ridiculous, but fun. #crochet #poppintags
Further work on the hook, I removed a lot morw material on the jaw(? correct term ?) and now it grabs the rope better, since this is chord, ot ia very rigid, unlike yarn. Other chonkyβ„’ fibers are normally more plush or squishy.

This takes a LOT of rope. I can hope for a seat cover at this point. LOL #crochet

The hook has been finish sanded sufficient for "production", I mean it was fine, but now it looks pretty. It is also HEAVY. I love this very thick and tactile form of knotting up the place. I make these with tool steel punches from Harbor Freight. The same principles could be applied to bamboo, aluminum rod, etc, but thes are built for me, and I have proven to be a bit hard on my hooks. One of my spawn banned me from borrowing theirs... :)
I accepted this and started making my own.

I do not condone violence for it's own sake, but if one needed to stab a motherfucker in defence, this would do in a pinch.
@thejikz like a large maglite. works as both a flashlight and to hit someone over the head with
@emily_rugburn and even less conspicuous! LOL

Completed!! I saw that I was running out of rope, so it became a decorative nautilus shell. Using the tool steel hook was imperative for this rope, it is stiff and tough to work unless you have a stout one, even if you preplan your loops a bit.
I was a bit surprised how much rope this eats up, but totally worth it. I love the end shape, it may go on a wall or something.

@thejikz it would be neat if you got some green rope and made it into a snail 😊

@thejikz that's really cool! What length rope went into this?

I've been enjoying this thread and your ingenuity - thanks for sharing! πŸ’–

@llorenzin 100 Feet, and thank you!
@thejikz Thank you for sharing! The finished product is wonderful πŸ™‚
And I like how smooth the hook looks.
@thejikz beautiful!
@bazkie :D
I really love this medium. Metal is in my bones...not like wolverine, but ya know. There is something so satisfying and final about how it shapes. Then it can help make stuff?! Bonus!!

@thejikz Both effective and aesthetically pleasing.

And what are you actually making with your rope-crochet? Baskets?

@kerravonsen I want to get to that maybe, but currently this lark will be a seat cover due to amounts. If I find a 500' spool on sale, maybe that or a yard swing.
@thejikz nice experiment. How thick is it?
@kokorins 3/8 rope, its turning out over an inch thick in total I think. My squirrel brain is conceptualizing a seat I can suspend from a tree now... :)
