I just installed KDE Connect on my #nixos laptop and it's absolutely amazing! Seamless integration between my laptop and phone. Send files, clipboard, SMS, etc.

It proves that the choice between freedom and seamlessness (i.e. walled gardens) is a false dichotomy; you can have both.

#linux #android #e_os #kde #dankmaterialshell

@mawkler I am a KDE fanboy because of that experience for sure.
@gabe I'm not even on KDE but it works great anyway
@mawkler Does the phone also having to be running KDE?

@sjb @mawkler

It's an app for Android.

People on #gnome desktops can use the extension called #gsconnect instead.

@leffe @mawkler I might try it as connecting the phone via a cable is awkward (mainly Android's fault for wanting me to switch from charging to file transfer mode every time, but also Linux's reading of the folders crashes sometimes).
@mawkler Must have tool for your SteamDeck as well.
@mawkler i love kde connect (even with gnome)
@mawkler shockingly good tool.

@mawkler Well, I'm currently using it with Debian (without KDE) and my Pixel 7. It works for now. We'll see how long that lasts. In the past, I've had it quit working, or just simply hang there forever doing nothing.

Can it (1) delete texts from the phone, and (2) avoid bringing in messages from phone number marked as scammers/spammers? I hope so, that was very annoying!

Much easier typing texts on my puter than on my phone! I don't do anything else with it.

@mawkler it's good, but it lacks the integration of windows phone link. You can't connect via Bluetooth and toggle hotspot on the phone, for instance. It's really weird to me that the integration is better between windows and android than Linux and android.
@mawkler LocalSend is also good!

@mawkler I've used it in the past - sadly its device pairing broke in seemingly random intervals for me, which then required a repair and manual restore of the settings. Really put a dent on the otherwise seamless experience!

It's been a while that I last used it though, maybe time to try it again?

@mawkler @kde I’ve never been able to get this to work usefully with my iPhone
