Hey! I'm Sam, and I'm in the US (don't hold that against me). I use they/she pronouns. Would love to make some new internet friends to share ideas and funny memes with!

Aquarius? I don't really buy into astrology as a sure thing, but I certainly can't deny that we're all made of star dust. Besides, it's fun! Is that very Aquarius of me?

Queer! Late-blooming lesbian? Was in a 15-year relationship with a cis-man and identified as bi until mid-2025. But I believe gender and sexuality are fluid!

Parent! I have a 4-year-old, and he's really cool. Trying to raise him to be a decent human being.

Crafts! Typical ADHD person who tries a new hobby every 5 minutes. I like cross stitch, knitting, crocheting, cardmaking, and most recently have started my first loom weaving project. Very into folk art and what has historically been considered "women's hobbies."

Movies! Love watching movies, reading about them, and analyzing everything in them. Was a video producer/editor in a past life.

Horror fan! I am really into horror, but it's not the ONLY kind of media I'm into. Just started reading more horror last year, so send me your horror book recommendations!

Music! I'm mainly a drummer, but I dabble in other instruments as well. Also love listening to all sorts of genres. I have been really into hyper-pop and death metal lately.

Politics! very left. Fuck ICE. Free Palestine. Eat the rich.

Thanks for reading my novel.

@zem welcome! I have a letterbox'd and keep meaning to go update it but never seem to dedicate the time. Got a top 4?
@alexmorse I'm so bad at keeping mine up-to-date. I have tried to make a top 4, but I always end up just staring at that section on my profile. It's impossible to choose! First thing that comes to mind right now is the original Black Christmas though. What about you?

@zem right now it's hundreds of beavers, but it's also because I can't choose and recency bias, just threw a beaver watch party last month.

I honestly don't know how to do "top" anything, like you ask me any given day and I can grab some great films but it's going to be different each day.

@alexmorse Right?! It depends on my mood! Current events! What I had for breakfast!
@zem Everybody loves pics of craft projects, so share yours if you feel like it. Here's a crochet Metaluna Mutant doll I made (monster from 1950s sci-fi movie "This Island Earth"). I've been trying to crochet Johnny Sokko's Flying Robot but can't get the weird pharaoh-hat right.
@Deidzoeb Very nice! I'm not at the point yet where I feel confident making my own patterns, so kudos to you!
@zem Welcome! Never enough queer horror fans in the world :)
@zem Welcome, Zem! Have you read much Stephen Graham Jones? I’ve been posting about The Buffalo Hunter Hunter because it’s blowing me away - for the story, the writing, and the unflinching look at American behavior since we founded (stole) this country.
@adhdeanasl I haven’t! I have been putting it off because I don’t really know if I’ll be into the sort of horror he writes. I’ve been meaning to read My Heart Is a Chainsaw! Maybe I’ll finally do it this year.
@zem I have that but haven’t started reading it yet. Looking forward to it, though.
@zem Welcome to the fediverse. They say it’s a great neighborhood to raise kids. And much later your family can watch the weekly #Monsterdon
@Pollinators this sounds so fun!
@zem Welcome! What Daisy said: queer horror fans unite!

@zem wow. You are super cool.

You may regret asking me for horror rec's 😁, but if you can tell me any authors you already like, that will help me steer you in the right direction for you. I have favorite horror novelists and also writers of short stories.

@kimlockhartga @zem Thanks! :) This is the account I use now, so I'm going to respond to you here.

I am starting to think my favorite book ever is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. But I also really like short stories, because it's been so hard for me to finish anything lately. I really like Shirley Jackson. I consider The Vegetarian by Han King to be horror-adjacent?

But I haven't read to much that's specifically considered horror. Honestly, I like to be disturbed 😈 . Give me your worst!

@zem @zem

Okay, here goes, if you can handle both body horror and psychological horror. (I'm not big on Eldritch horror.) Hopefully, you won't think there's something wrong with me 😄 to suggest such dark stories, but I admire good writing and effective storytelling in all genres. If you want genre mashups, and ones that defy categorization, I've got some super out-there ones I can recommend as well.

Full length novels:

The Library at Mount Char, Scott Hawkins. (Incredible, the novel all other horror novels measure themselves against.)

The Only Good Indians, Stephen Graham Jones.(Horror with an indigenous spiritual focus) He also writes short fiction.

The Dead and the Dark, Courtney Gould (paranormal)

Red Rabbit, Alex Grecian. (Magic and murders)

Our Share of Night, Mariana Enriquez (complex, creepy, and disturbing at times)

Short Story Horror collections:

Song for the Unraveling of the World: Stories, Brian Evenson.

And at my Back I Always Hear, Scott Nicolay (disturbing in unexpected ways)

Mouthful of Birds, Samanta Schweblin (very quirky and provocative)

The Glassy, Burning Floor of Hell, Brian Evenson

Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird, Augustina Bazterrica. (People love it or hate it)

Manga:

No Longer Human, Junji Ito

Monster, Naoki Urusawa

(There's a lot more like this out there.)

Graphic Novel:

The Woods (omnibus), James Tynion (sci fi horror)

Graphic Short Stories:

Strange, Dark, and Mysterious: the Graphic Stories, MrBallen

@kimlockhartga Oh yeah, this is right up my alley! I did totally forget that I started both Tomie by Junji Ito and PTSD Radio. Love those! I'm going to have to put these on my list! Thank you!
@zem glad that some of these may intersect with your interests. 😃
@kimlockhartga If I ever finish one, I'll let you know what I think! 😅
@zem ha ha. That's why I included graphic work.

@zem Howdy, Zem! Welcome. Always good to have more horror fans here. I am he/they.

I’m a horror reader too, more in the gothic realm (DuMaurier, Shirley Jackson, Poe).

And a Gemini who doesn’t believe in astrology no matter how closely I track to my sign.

Also ADHD, probably AuDHD. Hurray for multiple (sometimes fleeting) interests!

@colorblindcowboy @zem haha amazing! I was just writing to someone else that I think Rebecca is maybe my favorite book ever and I also love Shirley Jackson. I once heard someone describe Shirley Jackson as more "terror" than "horror," and that's something I can get behind.

@zem @zem It’s true, since terror is suspecting and horror is knowing.

I recently read DuMaurier’s short story collection “Don’t Look Now” and it is excellent.

@colorblindcowboy That one is on my shelf and has been staring me down for a while now.
