New article out about what a million satellites could do to our atmosphere. It's bad. https://theconversation.com/a-new-space-race-could-turn-our-atmosphere-into-a-crematorium-for-satellites-276366
A new space race could turn our atmosphere into a ‘crematorium for satellites’

Planned ‘megaconstellations’ of satellites could cause unforeseen harm to the ozone layer and climate systems. Global regulation is needed before it’s too late.

@sundogplanets can we point the chemtrails conspiracy crazies at this problem?

@sundogplanets We burn garbage [pollute the air] ditch it or bury it in the ground [pollute the land] or dump it in the chuck [pollute the oceans]

The last frontier - dumping garbage in space!

Pre-teen me reading my Above & Beyond encyclopedia set and watching the Gemini & Apollo launches never foresaw us filling space with trash.

But here we are...

@sundogplanets I'm pretty sure they will trigger the Kessler syndrome long before we reach satellite numbers like that, and then, the Space Age will be over, no more satellites until most of the debris cloud has deorbited, and by the time we could theoretically launch rockets again, we won't have any industries left that could produce them.

@sundogplanets

Reminds of when we used to add lead to gasoline, creating a microscopic layer of water-soluble toxic material on everything -- because 'anti-knock' for autos.

No one wanted anyone thinking about that, either. It took a battle.

@sundogplanets But if Musky achieves a stratospheric solar panel, encompassing the globe; you'll pay for a sunny disposition!..
@sundogplanets So we'd better get used to the smell of burning aluminium ?
@sundogplanets we are totally fuck. The more I know the more I want to finish like Walter Benjamin.

@sundogplanets

The musk legacy. The space trash will annoy us for longer than we even remember him.

@sundogplanets Last year when I was in Japan, I saw this trash bin with a big anti-smoking sticker on it. It really struck a chord with me. With this billionaire space race, we can apply the same to the garbage of the satellites. Where does the fallout go? Only the billionaires are unconcerned.
@sundogplanets Maybe you already saw this BBC article about the lithium pollution in the upper atmosphere from a Starlink satellite reentry. It is based on a recently published paper.

SpaceX rocket fireball linked to plume of lithium

A SpaceX Falcon 9 crashed to Earth last year. Now scientists have measured the pollution it caused.
