15 years ago we spent about $10k a year in the market. Groceries, cheese, meat, restaurants. Today that number is less than $500. Near zero really. And consists of occasional bread or cheese. The city has spent a moderate sum on ugly refinements without ever tackling the real (CARS) problem while the new “arms length” market authority has killed all the vendors I used to frequent. The mayor hates the market unless it’s a place for his rich friends to drive to and party. #ottcity. https://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/stop-promising-to-revamp-the-byward-market-do-it-already-opinion
Stop promising to revamp the ByWard Market. Do it already. | Opinion

Much of what Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe is now promising was already in a 2021 plan approved by a previous Council. | Opinion

@auxonic
My experience is similar. I used to go every weekend and come home with groceries, plants or whatever. Now I don't. Between poor transit and the closure of the real food places, there is little reason to go. Very sad.
@gardencat @auxonic I think the city wants to turn it into a tourist trap and not a useful part of the city. We used to buy most of our vegetables at the stalls once they were open, and got meat from the butcher… 🤷🏻
