“Today, transgender people across Kansas are reporting receiving letters from the Kansas Division of Vehicles stating that they must surrender their driver's licenses and that their current credentials will be considered invalid upon the law's publication in the Kansas Register on Thursday.”

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses

"The legislature did not include a grace period."

@tusk81 Surely, revoking IDs without advance notice like that would be illegal and unenforceablein a Rechtsstaatlich country.
@tusk81 Ignore the poor translation into "rule of law", which is a related but different concept, and consider the six principles listed at https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/policies/justice-and-fundamental-rights/upholding-rule-law/rule-law/what-rule-law_en.
What is the rule of law?

The rule of law is one of the EU’s fundamental values, guaranteeing democracy and citizens’ rights and freedoms.

@riley @tusk81 and yet it only matters of it is actually enforced.

"New law puts Kansas at vanguard of denying trans identities on drivers licenses, birth certificates"

New law puts Kansas at the vanguard of denying trans identities on IDs

Kansas is set to invalidate about 1,700 driver's licenses held by transgender residents and roughly as many of their birth certificates. It's because of a new law that goes beyond Republican-imposed restrictions in other states on listing gender identities in government documents. The law takes effect this week after the Legislature’s Republican supermajorities last week overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. The new law prohibits the documents from listing any sex other than the one assigned birth and invalidates any that reflect a conflicting gender identity. A handful of states don't allow changes in the documents, but only Kansas requires undoing past changes.

I hope that a bunch of Kansans tell their state to pound sand because...

"No person shall ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law."

@tusk81 “Transgender people should exercise extreme caution when traveling through the state…”

Because of self-appointed bathroom police and that mentioned obscene bounty, I would expand this to all women, trans or not. If you don’t fit some ideal, it could be dangerous even if you have “the approved parts.”

So sorry folk who live there. Even with this draconian law, folk typically have a month or so to drive on an expired licence to give time for a new licence to arrive.

@CStamp @tusk81 oh holy fuck.
@MissConstrue @tusk81 Right? I don’t understand how this could be legal, but red state is going to red state. It’s bad all around, but especially for those who can’t afford to move.
@CStamp @MissConstrue @tusk81
Courts might shut it down, eventually. But in such a conservative area they might try to delay any challenges and eventually rule against them. 10th circuit court might be more favorable, but Supreme Court is pretty fundamentalist these days 🤷‍♀️
and Gavin Newsom is still framing this as something woke Democrats spend too much time talking about 🫠
@tusk81 do the words "class action" help it all?
