When I share with y'all, I mostly rely on video sites, obviously most commonly youtube.
But what *I'm* listening to is mp3's or flacs or oggs on my own computer.
I don't know whether you've noticed, but all of the streaming sites are extractive capitalist organizations.
They don't care about music. They don't care about musicians.
Sometimes, with noob musicians especially, I just send them money, w/o ordering an album.
I already got the album. I'm just giving them money cuz they deserve my support.
@cks @GeePawHill band camp is a good example of where I _cannot_ buy the music I want legally. I am Unsure if it impossible to purchase drm free albums or singles without the streaming services now but a quick search on BC could not find me some mainstream music (tho plenty of âremixesâ of that mainstream song.).
Is the only alternative pirating in that case?
(or what studios would like to define as pirating after you purchase from themâŠ:-/ )
@GeePawHill Synology for storage, Daphile on a mini PC for streaming to a non-networked stereo, net-aware Yamaha receiver otherwise, and 40 years of accumulated CDs, plus whatever DRM-free tracks I can buy from wherever I can find them. I've been on a Blue Ăyster Cult kick for the past 3-4 months and recently picked up Albert Bouchard's Imaginos trilogy (long story) on Bandcamp and kicked him a few extra bucks per album because I can.
My two biggest frustrations are finding new music and finding usable digital downloads (vs streams or f'ing vinyl. Who the hell has space and gear for vinyl? Do I look like Steve Albini?)
@GeePawHill I have a weird and inconsistent history with streaming music, but the short version is I never paid for it. These days, I buy my music only from places where I can download DRM-free versions, although I still use their online player.
(I have paid for streaming video for Japanese anime shows, but I view them differently. I almost never rewatch shows, while I relisten to music all the time. 99% of the anime I've watched I don't want to keep a copy.)
