Which game has your favourite rule for deciding the first player?

Deciding who goes first in a game can be tough. Most of the time I'll let Steph do it, just because I'd such a nice person (😇) but sometimes a game has such an epic rule for choosing that we just have to run with it.

For Steph, her favourite first player rule comes from The Great Heartland Hauling Co. It reads "The player with the best moustache, or failing that, the longest hair, is first player". Anyone who's met Steph knows she's a shoe in to win that, though I won't tell you which part applies!

For me, my favourite is any game where the oldest player goes first. That's a rarity, because designers seem to want to give the young an advantage (like they need it!). I'm the oldest player in our gaming circle, so this one always benefits me.

I'm sure there are a ton of other great ones out there, so we'd love to hear which game has your favourite!

I like "We're Doomed" - first player to grab the timer and turn it over starts. Feels symbolic to start a game where players are selfishly trying to save themselves from the apocalypse to fight over something.

Oh that's a fun one - except I know around here we'd either end up with an injury (don't talk to me about the taco Cat incident!) or the timer on the floor!
@ATaleofTwoMeeples I like very thematic ones like Windmill Valley’s last person to buy flowers. Or (I don’t remember what these ones are from), most recent one to mix a drink or whoever travelled the furthest for the today.
I really need to try Windmill Valley, thanks for the reminder. I guess I'd get to be first player! Is that last one from Let's go to Japan maybe?

@ATaleofTwoMeeples I pulled up Let's go to Japan on BGG and I'm not finding any rule for who goes first in the rulebook, but I'm probably searching for the wrong words.

I've been taking a little journey recently learning a bunch of Board & Dice games and they're usually really good. Windmill Valley is especially fun with your two windmill's spinning to determine what actions you can take.

That sounds a bit like Glass Road?
@ATaleofTwoMeeples I haven't played Glass Road. :/
We both liked it, much shorter and lighter than we expected, and there are different 2 player rules, but a good game
@ATaleofTwoMeeples Cards against Humanity lets the person who went to the toilet last start first
A little too much info for my liking but perfectly fitting for the game 😂
@ATaleofTwoMeeples ticket to ride has the most traveled person first player rule which is great and leaves it a bit open to interpretation. And, like you I appreciate the oldest player rule.
Yay, I'm not along getting stuck when the rule is always youngest player first! Yeah that one would be tough. Do they mean that day, or in their lifetime!
