The average ‘market rent’ for social housing in New Zealand (late 2023) was approximately $494 per week per property, As of early 2026, the average cost to keep a sentenced inmate in a New Zealand prison is approximately $201,480 per year that is approximately $3,850.00 per week.

Now I’m no economist but even I can see the best economic (and moral) solution to the #Aotearoa #NewZealand housing crisis is building and providing housing for the homeless rather than building more prisons.

Tell that to anyone who tries to tell you that this #NZPol coalition of morons are good for the economy.

NZ adult minimum wage after tax is $780/week - Paying people would be more "economic" than imprisoning them.
UBI anybody?

I agree with you about providing housing, along with mental and physical health support for those that need it (homeless or not actually)
