my poor sanyo 3do is having disc drive trouble... going to open it up and see what i can do with the replacement parts i ordered

these old front-loading optical drives have such issues so many decades later, doesn't even seem to matter what hardware we're talking about

it's a real toss-up for me in terms of which console i find prettier between panasonic's fz-1 and the sanyo try... both have such character!
i need to get a proper electronics toolkit, i'm tired of fishing through closets and checking all the bedrooms to see who last took what and didn't put it back
i do projects like this often enough where it'd make sense to get something from ifixit or something
@eri i've had an ifixit pro tech toolkit for about a decade and while i have added many other tools to my arsenal, it's usually the first thing i grab and can do most jobs well enough on its own. and the price isn't too bad at $75 (or $60 refurbished that still comes with the lifetime guarantee)
@violet_cybrespace i went ahead and ordered one of these - i've used them before and they are pretty awesome

i fixed it! :D it was the ribbon cable after all

you can watch me testing it here:

https://eriis.gay/videos/Sanyo%203DO.mp4

the problem is that the oem ribbon cable is too short - when the disc tray opens and closes it physically pulls the cable taut, and after 30+ years of that back and forth the contacts get damaged and it stops working altogether

the replacement cable has a lot more slack to it so it shouldn't happen again. taking the cd-rom drive assembly apart was a real pain but it was worth it!

i like that all the 3do models have a different attract screen, they're fun to watch :3
i get the sense that my sanyo try was very lightly used by the previous owner though besides this... both inside and out it looks basically brand new
