Several European countries are considering social media bans for children. We must regulate platforms, not children. We must shift the burden of safety from the children to the corporations that profit from the environment.

I urge caution:

@commissionerHR I love it! We should be calling dark patterns out for what they are, instead of just focusing on "deceptive advertising" which isn't applicable to kids because advertising to them doesn't need to be deceptive to be effective and abusive.

We should not focus only on "protecting children" but rather in protecting the user, without ageisms.

There are vulnerable people of all ages that need special protection from malicious content (not withstanding children being the most vulnerable).

@commissionerHR These platforms already know the colour of your eyes, your gender, the names of your closest friends, and much, much more. So there is so much they could do - easily - to provide a safer environment. But that costs money and loses revenue, so for the most part they just go for the profit. Governments have big levers to use, but most are afraid to use them...

As it stands now; keeping insanity under 2% is near impossible without an education revolution.

@commissionerHR why not ban algorithm feeds? Social media feeds should display content of people you click to follow (like Facebook used to be in the early days)

Take care as "algorithm feed" can also be used to designate user filtering.

We should only allow user-managed feed algorithms.

Should anyone else (even third-party vendors or the platforms themselves) supply other choices of feed algorithms, it should only be of the user's choice AND portable to any other platform.

@Robo sorting content by date and time of posting is also an algorithm. Beware of over simplification, and of the meaning of the words.

@vdd @commissionerHR yes agreed. I was hoping people understand it referred to a TikTok type algorithm and not any kind of programming "algorithm"

@Robo that's nice, but often a trap, that people who are less into the issue, or in bad faith will use to get results that are not those that you expect. Specially because, to start: we really don't know what is the TikTok algorithm.

What if there are algorithms not as simple as the one I mentioned before, but that are good or at least not evil?

@commissionerHR Excellent shout out! Let's not forget that a large part of what's good about the internet is "user generated content", like Wikipedia. Let's not throw out the baby (all the information, supportive environments, harmless entertainent) with the bathwater (the actually harmful content)!

Préambule : La Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée (TVA) est un levier puissant pour orienter les choix de consommation et encourager une économie plus vertueuse. Aujourd’hui, son application ne reflète ni les enjeux écologiques ni les inégalités sociales. Nous proposons une réforme ambitieuse : **un système de TVA modulé selon un score évaluant l’impact global des produits**, inspiré du modèle du NutriScore. Pourquoi cette réforme ? 1. Justice sociale : Les produits issus d’entreprises respectant un SMIC décent, des conventions collectives et des droits des travailleurs doivent être encouragés. 2. Urgence écologique : Les produits locaux, peu polluants et issus de l’agriculture biologique ou raisonnée méritent d’être accessibles à tous. 3. Transparence économique : Les produits importés de loin, polluants ou fabriqués dans des conditions sociales indignes doivent contribuer davantage au financement de la transition. Nos propositions concrètes : - Un score TVA : Chaque produit se verrait attribuer un score (de A à E) évaluant : - L’impact écologique (empreinte carbone, mode de production, circuit court, etc.). - La responsabilité sociale (rémunération des travailleurs, respect des droits, etc.). - L’utilité économique (priorité aux produits de première nécessité et aux filières locales). - Une modulation des taux : - Taux à 0% : Produits de première nécessité (eau, aliments non transformés en bio ou raisonné), produits locaux et équitables. - Taux réduit (5,5%): Produits respectant des critères sociaux et écologiques stricts (score A ou B). - Taux standard (20%): Produits moyens (score C). - Taux majoré (30% ou plus) : Produits polluants, importés de loin ou issus de filières non éthiques (score D ou E). - Un financement vertueux: Les recettes supplémentaires issues des produits les moins vertueux financeraient la transition écologique et sociale (aides aux agriculteurs bio, subventions pour les circuits courts, etc.). Exemples concrets : Légumes bio locaux Score A Taux de TVA proposé 0% Vêtements fabriqués en France avec coton bio Score B. Taux de TVA proposé 5,5% Smartphone importé (fabriqué dans des conditions sociales critiquables) Score D Taux de TVA proposé 30% ou plus Appel aux décideurs : Nous demandons au gouvernement et aux parlementaires d’étudier et de mettre en œuvre cette réforme, en concertation avec les acteurs économiques, les associations et les citoyens.
