I want to be clear that I don’t hate AI. I hate abuse of people, abuse of resources, theft of other peoples property, replacement of humans by machines that produce a substandard outcome, and the enshittification of the economy for profits for the wealthy.

Solve those things and I love the concept of AI.

@sarah I completely agree! Also, remove the concept some people (middle management mostly) have that AI is like their long-lost child, that they can teach tricks to carry on their legacy.

@sarah yeah I was momentarily excited about it, for a whole 5 minutes (ok, a few weeks or so). Then I learned about what was actually behind it, and saw what it was actually producing. I've actually spent quite a bit of time working with it and learning about it so it *really* bugs me when people say 'oh, you just don't understand it, if you knew what you were doing ....'

@sarah All these things have to be dealt with by the people who use AI. AI is just a machine.

AI can help the world flourish scientifically because it has a huge database of resources. Yes, those that someone wrote.

It can also help destroy it thanks to the same database.
It's still all about the people who use it.

Look at what has happened to social networks. Every good idea is first abused before it is reworked into a better version.

@pavlas That huge database of resources is owned, controlled & monetized by about 7 private companies globally.

Centralizing the data & public resources of our entire species makes it LESS accessible & useful not more.

We gave them that data. With AI, everyone can now see and hear it. For now. I remember when Google was just a garage search engine. It's time to move on.

No one knows what will happen in a few months, let alone years. Hell or paradise or something in between.

@pavlas I absolutely reject that assertion. I published my own blog on my own hosting with clear copyright notices. The LLM bots come along and scrape my images & writing without my permission and against the terms of copyright.

I add rules to my robots.txt explicitly forbidding them from scraping my data... and most of them ignore it.

It was always that we are criminals if we "pirate" their media, but they (big corporations) can do what they want with ours.

@pavlas The comparison is that there was a bunch of beautiful sculptures along a public road that anyone can see. Then a big company came along & made copies of those sculptures and put them in a private museum. They even made new sculptures based on the copied ones. The museum is kinda free.... for now. And they are erecting a barricade to make the public road with the originals harder to find.

@syntaxseed The Internet. The original idea was to share information. The first to connect were two university libraries. In my opinion, the Internet is still about sharing information. Anyone who posts something there expects countless other internet users to see it. Search engines are paid for making it easier to surf the internet. We have become accustomed to them as a matter of course, but that was never the case. They were created to generate profit.

"Traditional" Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, >>> Outside of Generative AI <<<, have proven useful and successful over the decades. They have become part of our everyday lives. Their judicious use has improved our lives.

But, while Generative AI produces impressive looking demos, its outlandish cost and dangerously bad results make it something that should be shunned and outlawed, not embraced and boosted.
