Trans rights are human rights.

Boost if you agree.

Block me if you disagree.

This bubbled up this morning because an article about the new HBO MAX Harry Potter series floated across my screen and got me seething.

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it here, but one of my sisters is trans, as is her partner. Lovely people.

And I’m not doing that “Every woman is somebody’s sister/daughter/wife” thing. My connection to her isn’t why this matters to me.

But it is why I take transphobia very, very personally.
@maxleibman You need the world to be a fair place where everyone can get on with their lives without unnecessary grief. The real world is not like that, it is seething torturous catacomb of suffering with things barely recognisable push a way through unendurable horrors.When a small part of that pops up into your consciousness, strangely you focus on the personal injustice, when the real victims go unnoticed

@daniellatz @maxleibman

max is describing his path to awareness and concern

which is as valid as anyone's path, including yours

we all have a path in this world to awareness of injustice and suffering. none is better than any other, as long as the destination is the same

don't be an asshole to other people about their path. i would like to examine yours and shit all over it too. nah, i wouldn't do that. because i'm not like you. your condescension is part of the horrors in the world

@daniellatz @maxleibman Do you think trans people are not "real victims" in today's society?
@daniellatz @maxleibman we all need to live in the world as it is, and not as it should be, that much is true, but the world as it is includes our desire, and capacity, to make it more like it should be. Yes there is other injustice, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to end this injustice. If we don't end the injustice we see because other injustices exist then the injustices in the world will never end.

@daniellatz @maxleibman what a sad, miserable little perspective you have. I would almost feel bad for you if it weren't a choice you make.

We want the world to be better than the festering shithole of ignorance and hopelessness that you portray, so we act to make it thus. We care for members in our community who are unjustly targeted, and will defend their rights as if they were our own, because they are.

You could choose to make reality a little less shitty, instead of a little more.

@daniellatz @maxleibman Thank you for triggering so much good sense. Read the replies and engage in self examination.
@maxleibman Yeah, I don't think that franchise is redeemable at this point. It needs to be put down and stay down.
@StarkRG

So many actors I will not watch now they have signed up for the TURTFGCHC; I assume in blood.

@maxleibman
@bewilderbeast23

OK while since I wrote it, I think I was referring to utterly pointless remakes to profit Rowling/Galbraith; to fund their hate campaign.

@StarkRG @maxleibman
@maxleibman I'm not personally connected to any trans people (unless they are in stealth mode, which is imho more likely than there not being any around here), but I AM personally connected to people that would like to police what other people are allowed to do with their own bodies, and let me tell you, those people are nasty. And won't stop at policing trans people. They need dealing with.
We Must Stand with Our Trans Neighbors | Defend Public Health

Most of us have some hobby or favorite activity we do to keep ourselves sane amid the pressures of daily living and the increasing political madness that is the USA. For me, it’s performing in community theater, and that’s where I met Perry (a pseudonym). At 17, Perry was the youngest transgender person I’d ever known. Today, he and every trans person in the U.S. is in danger.

@maxleibman

A reason, no, you don't need a reason for being decent.
An explanation for your suppressed rage over the issue, yes.

Badly put i'm dyspraxic.
I mean no reason needed, no reason to suppose it is only because it is personal to you and does give insight into why you express yourself so strongly over the current manufactured "Culture Wars".

At some point, you are against a wall / in a corner, all you can do is fight or die.

The being decent requires no reason, and is admirable in itself is what I meant.

@maxleibman
Yeah, trans rights are human rights regardless of whether you know & love any trans people personally.

But when you do have trans folks you love... Well, it makes you want to fight anybody who would hurt them.

I spoke out for trans rights when I didn't have any (out) trans friends, but I have several now, & it puts a fire inside me. I fight for them.

@artemis

Not always. I have to stay away from my family, cos they still hope (think) I made a mistake, and maybe one day I realise this and go back. I've not spoken to my mum, for a year and a half now. 21 years transitioned, and cos I mentioned my depression was ticking up again the other year, she was back with the "hopeful" question of did I think I'd made a mistake.

Fuck . That. Shit.

So no, just cos people know trans folk, doesn't mean they'll come out to bat for them.

@latelesley
I hope it did not feel like I was invalidating your experience. If it did, I apologize.

I am genuinely sorry that your loved ones are unwilling to accept you in your wholeness. That is such a heavy thing to carry for so long. 💜

I meant that love is a powerful force that gives people courage. Some people put their fears, wishes, & desires ahead of their love for someone. Doesn't mean that they don't love, but they are not acting in love when they do that.

@latelesley
You deserve love that is better than that. You don't just deserve to be accepted: you deserve to be FOUGHT FOR. You really do.

You are worthy of the kind of love that will not let up & I am so sorry that people in your life have not lived up to that.

@artemis

Och, you weren't invalidating my experience. None of it is in any way your fault, quite the opposite. Your fighting for oppressed folk when you even don't know them!

I'm just pointing out though, that not all trans people have folk in their life who know them, will fight for them and their rights, and in a lot of cases will just victim blame instead. Cos that's easier, right? How dare us be different from everyone else, and still demand some basic respect.

@artemis

Keep fighting the good fight, we need folk like you more than ever.

But just remember, not all trans peeps have supportive friends and family. A lot still have to deal with families who think we live our lives "wrong" and undermine your identity at every turn.

@maxleibman it _is_ personal - attacking trans people is an attack on everyone's right to personhood. Fuck these TERF assholes with a splintery post.

TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS. ✊

@maxleibman
> Boost if ...

What is this Facebook?

@AnnyJoe Do they do that on Facebook? I know it from Twitter, which I’m riffing on only as a setup for the punchline.

@maxleibman die of shitting yourself too hard if you disagree
@maxleibman "Boost if you agree" would be nice if we left that behind with Facebook, also, we are on a network that is largely run by trans catgirls, I think most agree with this, if not, they not gonna last long...
@lettosprey Yeah, I meant it more of a riff on the “retweet if you X/fave if you Y” formulation from Twitter, but then it kind of blew up on me. 😂
@maxleibman @lettosprey My most popular social media post of all time is a Tumblr post asking people to reblog if they are ace/aro friendly. Doesn't really translate to the fediverse, where my instance admins will suspend anyone who is not "ace/aro friendly" (by the standard I was thinking of on 2017 Tumblr.)

@maxleibman I love how it worked out. The bit annoyed the crap out of me, but it allowed me to practice not replying when I have nothing positive to add.

The obvious, and presumably intentional false dichotomy can be appropriately reacted to by doing exactly nothing.

Art should provoke emotion. It did and it gave your great point a lot of reach. Everybody wins, even trolls that get educated 👏👏👏

@lettosprey

@maxleibman Now there's a Trans AM Enthusiast!
@maxleibman trans rights aren't just human rights but universal rights
@maxleibman Trans people are humans too. Would anyone opose that? Only rights that would be different are animal rights and as I see it, animals don't have any rights.
@alex94 @maxleibman Why do you think animals don't have any rights?
@2something @maxleibman Show me a law which defines animal rights.
@2something @maxleibman don't take me wrong, exploitations of animals is wrong...
@maxleibman Fuck all the way off if you disagree. I'm tired of coddling those who refuse to listen and grow.
@maxleibman this just in, I'm a human person. More news to follow at 9.
@oldladyplays @maxleibman 100% agreed and nothing will make me change that.
@maxleibman I've had transgender friends for 42 of my 59 years. I'm a staunch ally of that community and always will be. It's the hill I'm willing to die on.
@maxleibman I disagree with that approach. Blocking people based only on a disagreement strengthens filter bubbles, and this decreases people's ability to understand other worldviews. These bubbles are especially significant on social networks like Mastodon. So I think that people should engage with people with which they disagree.
@maxleibman Denying any human right to any human says „that one isn't fully human“. The very definition of being an asshole.

@maxleibman
Of course they are. Human Rights belong to all humans.

Those who wish to deny other humans human rights are welcome to secede from the human race if it bothers them.

@maxleibman finally boosted. And btw, if there was a #boostIfYouAgree hash, I would mute that now 😜

@maxleibman comment if this post had sent your autistic brain in a 5 minute spiral because you agree with trans rights but disagree with forced social interaction.

/irony for "comment if..."
/genuine for "i commented because..."

@maxleibman this toot contains an unwritten rule, one MUST boost each time one encounters this toot. If one has already boosted, remove the boost and boost again

Sorry, I didn't write the rules

@maxleibman the thing me and my friends say is if you are a human you just get rights no if's ands or buts you get basic rights.

@maxleibman

This is excellent strategy. Effecient. 😂

@maxleibman @chu I see what you did there 😁.

Once they block you they can't troll you. Excellent! 🤭👍
