#Art #ItalianArt #ByzantineArt Ceiling mosaic of the Arian Baptistery (that's Arian with an "i," not with a "y"), Ravenna, Italy. The baptistery was erected by Theoderic the Great, late 5th-early 6th century CE. It shows the scene of Christ being baptized by John the Baptist, surrounded by the twelve apostles. Note the figure to Christ's left, who is a personification of the river Jordan. Also note that Jesus is adult, naked and beardless, a rare combination in later medieval art.
