#Art #ItalianArt #ByzantineArt Ceiling mosaic in the Neonian Baptistery (also called Orthodox Baptistery), Ravenna, Italy. Like the Arian Baptistery I tooted yesterday, this ceiling also shows John the Baptist baptizing Christ while observed by the personified Jordan river, the picture surrounded by the twelve apostles.
#Art #ItalianArt #ByzantineArt Ceiling mosaic of the Arian Baptistery (that's Arian with an "i," not with a "y"), Ravenna, Italy. The baptistery was erected by Theoderic the Great, late 5th-early 6th century CE. It shows the scene of Christ being baptized by John the Baptist, surrounded by the twelve apostles. Note the figure to Christ's left, who is a personification of the river Jordan. Also note that Jesus is adult, naked and beardless, a rare combination in later medieval art.

#Art #ItalianArt #ByzantineArt A mosaic showing the city of Ravenna with the Classe harbor on the left, Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna, Italy. The brick wall was probably added later to cover the figure of Theoderic, the Ostrogothic king who oversaw the construction of this basilica and its mosaics.
