Breaking, from the NYT: Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Sweeping Tariffs

"In a major setback for President Trump’s economic agenda, the court ruled that he could not invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to set tariffs on imports. The 6-3 decision has significant implications for the economy and consumers. The federal government has collected more than $200 billion in tariffs since the start of last year."

Supreme Court’s Tariff Ruling and Trump’s Immediate New Levies Add New Uncertainty in Global Trade

The decision is a major setback for President Trump, who responded by imposing a 10 percent global tariff after lashing out at the justices who ruled against him. Trade deals his administration has struck with countries around the world are now in question.

@briankrebs the real question becomes:
- with tariffs gone, will american companies no longer have to pay them, or will some other bullshit crop up
- if they are in fact really gone, will they lower their prices again?
- are americans going to keep getting fucked in the wallet by american corporate greed, even though the tariffs are gone?
@Viss @briankrebs I mean, I think the third is clear.
@Viss @briankrebs unsure on the first question. But come on. You already know the answer to the last 2.
@varx @briankrebs of course, but asking them openly is deliberate :D
@Viss @briankrebs Prices don't usually go down. The best you can hope for is that they stop going up. Apple or OXO or Ford will just say "Great! Instead of paying that to Trump, we can just do regular stock buybacks that will help justify a 10% raise in the CEO's compensation package."
@Viss @briankrebs They won't do squat. If they pull back on prices at all, it'll be 5% (not 30 or whatever it may have actually been. The rest they will shrug off as InFlAtIoN.... as we see more record profits.
@Viss @briankrebs so wait. Did Trump broke a law? XD will he go to jail or something?
@grayrattus @Viss @briankrebs
SCOTUS already ruled in a separate decision that the President cannot be prosecuted for crimes they committed during their term. That's why he's not in jail for the insurrection or the classified documents.
@JamesDBartlett3 @Viss @briankrebs shiet. So in USA they actually vote for a king. Not a president.
@Viss @briankrebs price stickiness is a thing. I wouldn’t expect much of a drop in prices for most things. Maybe a small amount here and there, but overall the billionaires will just use it as a way to make themselves even more disgustingly wealthy to try and fill the hole in whatever they have that they think is a heart.
@briankrebs So, they'll have to pay back the $200b?
@rahulsetrakian from the story: Potential refunds: Anticipating the decision, companies have hired lawyers, filed suits and submitted claims in hopes of securing refunds on tariffs they had paid. It is unclear whether the government will have to pay.
@briankrebs Thank you for your response 🙏
@rahulsetrakian @briankrebs I hope it comes out of the defense budget
@briankrebs the amount collected can be used to pay for every country in the world to join the Board of Peace.
@briankrebs Not gunna lie. I did NOT expect this kind of rationality from the current supreme court. Its refreshing. Dare I get my hopes up for logical decisions that have a basis in reality in the future? (Probably not. But one can dream.)

@briankrebs

Funny how the significance of the decision means more #fountainpens for me.

@keraba @briankrebs Now if the AI bubble would just freakin' burst already gold nibs might become affordable again...

#fountainpens

@briankrebs Trump knows nothing.
@briankrebs can't lie, I'm boosting partly for the sweet thumbnail shot of the Seattle Port with Rainier in the background
@briankrebs which led to an increase on the stock market which I strongly believe Trump will claim was his success.
