Recently I bought a junk PSP (or so it was named) from Buyee in Japan, and shipped it over. Not only did it boot, but it ended up being a fun little time capsule with an ollllllld jailbreak in place!

If you've got any interest in #Sony #PSP handhelds, and wish there were more articles on them, then wish granted. Come and read mine!

I Bought a “Junk” PSP From Japan: Here’s How It Went

While I spend most of my time reviewing modern ‘retro’ handhelds (devices built to emulate everything under the sun) I’ve found myself wanting to go back to the roots of everything. The first‑party machines that actually started it all. And for me, that always leads back to Sony’

The Bryant Review
@flwwhtrbt instant must-read. I’ve been super curious about buying a second hand PSP.

@amd

Ohhhhh let me know what you think! And by all means, do it! I actually just ordered another one this morning (though this time it was one in "excellent" condition with all the original packaging and pieces!

@flwwhtrbt oh no... what have you done?!

Tested PSP-2000 on mecari/buyee are about 1/3 of local prices, even after shipping...

I guess I need to nab one of these, I could flip it for a profit if I don't like it...

@flwwhtrbt
I've never had a PSP, but it seems like a great system to try.

I read to get the 2000 for a general purpose system, what model do you like? any other tips on what to shop for?

@amd

Like my article stated, Mercari is a winner because you get the domestic postage (from the seller to the warehouse!) paid by the seller.

Buyee offers a few options like an inspection, but I always opt for the 'lite plan' (which is 0 extra yen. You don't need them to inspect it)

The 2000 and 3000 have a 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 better system. Double the RAM (from 32 to 64MB), brighter screen, USB charging, slightly more efficient battery

Just try find one without a yellowing screen!

@flwwhtrbt I was definitely looking at mecari ones.

Good note about skipping inspection. I’ll look for that.

@amd

Yep, once you 'order' it you're presented with a few options (I actually forget what each one is, since I never opt for them), going from the basic inspection (checking to see if the item in the package matches the item's listing) to...something more and more expensive. Terrible that I've forgotten what it is!

I suppose it is cheap peace of mind, but I've not once seen a item shipped that wasn't what it was meant to be :)

@amd

Take a few days! Filter by newly listed items, and Rakuten Rakuma is a good one too, you'll find a ton of those have domestic shipping covered by the seller also

In fact the one I bought this morning was from Rakuten Rakuma, and the seller covers shipping in Japan (for this entire box!)

@flwwhtrbt why did you get another after the first success? Just to have a more collectible one?

@amd

Its just how I'm built. My will is weak!

This new one is the next model (the 3000) just for curiosity's sake. It is a different color and the description stated it was in excellent condition!

I'd argue that the black is even more common than the silver, but I like the idea of having one in really really nice shape with the original packaging and 'things' :)

@flwwhtrbt after watching for a couple days I now have a USD$32 PSP2000 on order…and a $30 Nintendo dsi may have snuck into my cart as well……

Let’s hope they’re in playable condition once they make their way across the ocean.

Fortunately these are destined for EDC usage and I don’t care much how they look so long as they work.

@amd

That's so exciting!!!!

After a few days watching how things look, I'm sure you got a feel for it.

I've used Buyee for a few years now (exclusively for Nintendo things), and not one has been truly bad. They usually just need a good wipe down and clean out.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they are when they arrive to you!!!!!!
