#LetterboxdFriday!

Edge of the Knife (2018) - 4.5
Retake (2018) - 3.5
The first Haida-language feature film and its making of. Really great folktale of grief, remorse, forgiveness.

Happy Thanksgiving (2024) - 5
Great, funny short. Warpaint whiteface got me good.

Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) - 4.5
Touching story of friendship, a baseball team, guys being dudes, with a delightful sprinkle of humor throughout.

The Great Silence (1968) - 4.5
No hope, just depraved lawlessness for days.

True #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday

Hot Snake (1978) - 4
Mexican spaghetti western! Bounty hunting! Revenge! A bruja and her flautist! Good score, well shot.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) - 4
Not a Jarmusch guy, but enjoyed how this presents as serious but is actually pretty funny.

My Bloody Valentine (1981) - 4.5
Great characters in a Canadian blue-collar mining town reckon with its past. I love it!

Rats: Night of Terror (1984) - 3
Post-apocalyptic Italian biker gang v. ... RATS!

#LetterboxdFriday

Wuthering Heights (2026) - 3.5
Sugar. Pretty colors. Good music. Rots brain.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (2025) - 4.5
It's a good one - friendships are the best!

Bugonia (2025) - 4.5
Even better on rewatch!
(wife hadn't seen it yet)

Guns and Guts (1974) - 2.5
First/last 10 min are good!
More like Meh-xican.

The Terminator (1984) - 4.5
Jim used to make movies.

Born of Fire (1987) - 3
Intriguing. Need to rewatch.

Gugusse et l'Automate (1897) - 4.5
Méliès is back!

Born of Fire (1987) - 3.5
Rewatched as I said I would. I did miss a few things, nothing that helped clear up its dream logic, but it's a trip worth taking.

A Better Tomorrow (1986) - 4.5
Chow Yun-Fat is just a ball of charisma, and friendship is the best.

Les Enfants Terribles (1950) - 4.5
Chronologically watching (at least) one Melville a month with my friend. Took some time to get into this one, but once it clicked, I was all in on these strange siblings and their friends.

Only three for #LetterboxdFriday this week:

Best in Show (2000) - 3
A perfectly adequate, comfy comedy that just left me feeling "meh".

Darkman (1990) - 4
One of my favorites growing up! Fun to revisit after 20+ years not seeing it, both to rediscover it and to see things I wouldn't've back then. Kinda wild.

The Bride! (2026) - (still contemplating, but between a 3.5 and 4)
Don't know why, but I didn't expect as much camp, fun, humor. Wish it was more like 90-105 mins instead of 126, though.

Uh, 15 for #LetterboxdFriday(!), so a little different post:

Inspired curiosity
Perfectly a Strangeness (2024) - 3.5

Shorts you can ignore
Forevergreen (2025) - 3
The Singers (2025) - 3

Notes:

1. Interesting that there was a tie at the Oscars this year for Best Live-Action Short, and that it was between The Singers (pandering feel-good schlock) and Two People Exchanging Saliva (truly great/original, like if Yorgos Lanthimos were French).

2. Challengers is a blast. I needed this rewatch, it made me feel alive.

3. Neither stand-up special is family-friendly/SFW, but if you need to laugh at utter absurdity, or a dizzying dissection of self and sucking off, well then cheers!
