I struggle to understand why the EU commission is recommending people to use X. How else should the fact that the X logo is plastered all over their (our) web site be interpreted. It's a deeply irresponsible and harmful use of their power of influence.

After all that's happened and after all the pleading and campaigning by citizens. This is the kind of thing that truly makes you lose faith.

I can't even bring myself to tag them in this post. There's no point anyway.

Nearly half of Europeans would back banning X over EU law breaches

A new YouGov survey across Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland shows nearly half of Europeans (47 percent) would back banning social media platform X from the EU if it continues to breach EU rules.

Next they'll be advertising pornhub – because it has many users, they need to be where the users are...

Then cigarettes and crack cocaine – because why not, might as well...

What is leadership? I ask myself more and more often. Because clearly it's sorely missing in our age.

Sometimes things are fuzzy and unclear, there are arguments on the one hand and also on the other hand.

This is not such an issue. It's crystal clear.

@leanderlindahl Unfortunately it is common with many political parties, politicians, organisations, companies and individuals who should know better. Partly there seems to be a fear of losing 'all those followers' (90% of which are probably bots).
In Scotland only the Scottish Green party seems to be committed to using media like Mastodon.
@leanderlindahl Because politics move glacially slow and are sometimes unreasonably careful... Maybe you also wrote to MEPs and asked them them to leave using @leavex ? The answers I received vary wildly in vision and tech literacy.

@rraggl @leanderlindahl @leavex Maybe we should begin with a small, positive and eye opening proposal. French association RAP developed 3 simple laws to 'infiltrate' in commercial social media:

1) Ok, use them, but stop promoting. (That is: remove their logos/buttons from your web and other communications).

2) Don't create content exclusively for them. Your content's main reference must be under your control.

3) Don't pay to publish. No paid accounts, no paid campaigns.

@rraggl @leanderlindahl @leavex In my experience they work quite well. They are easy to understand and to follow, and in the process they work as a Trojan that gives way to a wider conversation on the way we consume social media...

... or unreasonably careless, sometimes (in this case)!

@rraggl

As @alexandrageese explained during https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/W8RCMT-the_fediverse_and_the_eus_digital_services_act_solving_the_challenges_of_modern_/, the misleading pretext they usually put forward when asked to move,  is the habits of the main media who always consider X as the ultimate reference to check communication content. So, the solution is simple : let's demand those main media be required to use open source protocols as their mandatory references so that they compel any politician or any authority to use those protocols.

FOSDEM 2026 - The Fediverse and the EU's Digital Services Act: solving the challenges of modern social media?

We can demand that our elected officials use a better, more democratic space to discuss issues. This makes more sense than demanding that the media do so, as the media should indeed follow what politicians are saying.

By the way, when I asked her in person in the hallway if she could ask her colleagues to stop using X, she said she wouldn't because of her respect for them.

I respectfully asked if she could share some letters with her colleagues, but she said she wouldn't. Fair enough; it's her choice.

However, one argument I heard was intriguing: since she is the DSA reference, she doesn't need X, so she can leave it. Journalists will call her if they need information on this topic.

We need a European version of Canadian @Paulatics . Or maybe we should invite her to talk to our European representatives.

Goodbye to Twitter - Alberta Views

Twitter kept assuming that I was a bot, and putting me in Twitter jail. I had to beg for my verification just so I could stay online.

@leanderlindahl It's early and I've had no coffee yet, but, why does the headline say "nearly half" of Europeans support banning X... but further down it's actually more like 70%?

@leanderlindahl Organistional inertia. Xitter used to not be a Nazi bar.

EU organisations often move slower than most, with the notable exceptions of the glacial ones of the Catholic Church's.

@leanderlindahl I agree. And every single on of us can help changing this: don't click, don't like, don't comment. If polititians have the feeling they are nit beeing seen, they move on. If their marketing advisors analyze their web reach & find X insufficiant, they will move on. Keep telling them to move away from USamerican based services & and promote European alternatives. We can as much move them, as they can talk to us.
