ive noticed a subtle decline in people using emojis in the last year or two. like, its very subtle, probably at or under the statistical noise floor, but i think they're on the way out culturally. in one-to-one communication they come across as "facebook aunt" these days, and in one-to-many media, the vibe they communicate is often just "AI smell"

@jk meanwhile the rise in voice memos has risen exponentially. As it allows voice inflections to be included, adding the context of an emoji is no longer required.

I was sick of texting. The solution was only a tap away.

Texting silenced our voices. Now they're making a comeback.

@jk I’ve noticed this as well! both broader use but also me personally, I use fewer emoji regularly. I think I also tend to use them more with people I know less? it feels less important to convey tonal context if you already know someone, as you can better trust they’ll know how to fill in the gaps, whereas that doesn’t apply so much to new people
@jk I have also noticed this quite a lot, but I would like to point out that this may be a bit specific to people writing in English or in westernized contexts as I think the use of emoji in written form from people coming from the global south seems to me to have risen.
@jk If I didn't have five million better things to do, it would be really interesting to take the firehose of some of the social networks and start running statistics on emoji use...
@jk ill be happy when theyre gone
