Hey, so I'm currently checking out #Matrix / #Element as an alternative for #Discord.

Element seems to be a good alternative so far (only tested it a few hours)

There are 2 things that annoy me a tiny bit.

For example watching multiple streams at the same time. You have to switch between them with the arrow keys.

Secondly #CachyOS seems to block audio for one application if I have discord and element open.

Maybe Cachy-users can help me with that one thanks in advance😹

@Bioaxxis
This may have to do with Xwayland. (Xwayland-satellite) Discord and element are not build for the Wayland compositor. They still rely on xorg. So Wayland can emulate xorg for certain apps that still haven’t been redesigned with Wayland protocols in mind

@locustmage

Thank you for the clarification! It's no big deal for me cause either I switch completely to element and delete discord or stay with discord and delete element.

Its only a problem as long as I want to use both and forget to close one before I open the other😹

Is there a simple workaround for this problem or do I have to just wait for the apps to get updated for Wayland?

@Bioaxxis simple? Not so much workaround? Yes. There is series of these ā€œcompatibility layersā€ first off it starts with how Wayland operates compared to xorg. Check into xwayland-satillite, xdg-portal (there is several KDE/gnome) I use a window manager, niri, so if I run into issues like this, I can tweak what happens when programs open. My first recommendation which I’ll admit I have no experience with personally is to use something called ā€œcageā€ it’s a Wayland compositor with built in Xwayland. A lot of people use it to run xorg software. It’s meant as a kiosk software to run one application full screen. Maybe you could run element inside it, until you delete discord?

@locustmage

Sounds like a simulated environment for the specific software I launch in it(with some sort of compatibility add ons). That's an interesting approach.

I will look into it later although It sounds a bit complicated at first, but that's on me cause I'm fairly new to Linux.
I installed cachyos 3 months ago. It was my first time ever using Linux. But using it on daily basis since that.

Thank you!
