And now, a visual representation of a circular definition

@ellane I saw this idea once and loved it so much that I actually went to one of those 'design-your-own-clocks' places to order it!
@ergative Nice! It does look cool.
@ellane the display is true and it shows what to expect over time. The use case are children who can’t read the clock so they are told: lunch starts when both hands index to the sky. Love it.
@real68er Love that! What a great approach to gentle teaching, and accessibility.

@ellane

This is so cool

@ellane

Uh, is it this time already?

@ellane is this some know art piece or just from you?
@jrmgx I confess to screenshotting it from Facebook where it was posted without credit. To purgatory I go!
@ellane haha no I just wanted to check the artist and see if they have other fun piece like that.

@jrmgx @ellane The designer Ji Lee wrote "When I was a graphic design student many years ago, I had a class project to design a clock. ... I had the most obvious idea and designed this Redundant Clock. ... I found out that someone liked the clock so much, he made one and posted it on Reddit. The post was so popular, it became the number one post" https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1859831505/redundant-clock

Redundant Clock

Simple, modern and totally redundant wall clock that shows what time it is.

Kickstarter

@jrmgx @ellane The AI Overview (not asked for) for the reverse image search was almost entirely inaccurate:

"The image shows a minimalist wall clock where standard hour markers are replaced with a single character or symbol repeated in different orientations.

• The symbol at each hour position appears to be the letter "L" or the number "1".
• The hands indicate the time is exactly 9:00.
• The clock has a simple, modern design with a white face and a metallic rim.
• The text "L 1 レー L" is visible in the top left quadrant of the clock face."

@foldworks Thank you for yet another reason why it's a bad idea to put AI in charge of …anything! "Oh, you can't see the nuances of a clever but redundant clock? Here, sit in front of this big red button instead but don't press it, please, unless a group of very trustworthy and competent humans tell you to"
@jrmgx

@foldworks Ah, thank you most kindly for the additional information!

It's apparent that people have taken the idea and created their own versions. The image I posted seems to have both hands of equal thickness, whereas Ji Lee's original version has the hour hand noticeably thicker.
@jrmgx

@ellane I have one very similar, that I painted myself. It's such a great desing !
@just_chill Ah, so you made your own clock? That’s cool!
@ellane I don't think I can say that I made it, I bought one and painted it over. I can take a picture when I get home if you'd like.
@just_chill Yes please, I’d love to see it!
@ellane you should paint a clock, it's great fun !
@just_chill Nice!! I bet you get comments from people who come over.
@ellane When I look at this - is it just me or do they look like posts in the ground with a shadow - i.e. a sundial....and now I'm wondering - it that actually the reason we made clocks look like this in the first place?!
@rich @ellane i think the same thing when i see it for the first time.
