i was one of the people who campaigned all across the state, educating politicians about the different technologies involved with voting machines.
the system we have in New York keeps voting separate from voter identification:

THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT wasn’t written just with African Americans in mind. what was passed in 1965 had to keep being amended and expanded.
that’s why demanding special paperwork, like original birth certificates only to vote were deemed anti-constitutional and a burden akin to a poll tax.
our states of residency already have ways to verify who we are. there is no need to burden voters, especially NATURALIZED CITIZENS… 🧵

the TL;DW: republicans want to get rid of citizenship for all working class people. used to be the oligarchy were mostly landowners and that’s who they wanted as voters. it’s now only the #EpsteinClass they want as voters:
1. during Trump’s 1st coup, they circulated a DoD memo trying to revoke birthright citizenship to children of USArmy personnel born in bases… 🧵
2. they also floated a memo trying to revoke the citizenship of Puerto Ricans born in the island ―an endeavor they haven’t given up since 1898
3. for decades Republicans wanted to set a price for citizenship. the Democrats’ compromise was an "investor" program with a minimum of $2.5 million. this is where Trump’s $1MM citizenship comes from.

NY DOESN’T ISSUE A “VOTER ID”, because it’s randomized. each election cycle, including special elections, they ask all voters to check the rolls; especially if you’ve moved addresses or a family member died. if nothing's changed, you do nothing.
a month before elections we get our elections books with a plastic chip or card with polling site info and a randomized number that brings up our registration info. that’s why the number isn't attached to our paper ballots.
NY STATE REFUSES TO CALL THE CARDS “VOTER ID”; exactly because the QR code is randomized every election and only used to bring up your Board of Elections approved voter registration card.
so y’all may want to double check with your state’s elections boards. am going to bet that the Republican controlled states call them ID cards ―in violation of the Voting Rights Act before Roberts. the law says, you only need proof of having registered to vote because that proves eligibility.

Every time I've seen a discussion by information security people about voting systems, the conclusion has been:
If you want both "one person one vote" and "anonymous voting" then there is no pure computer system that can actually give you that with proper auditability.
Paper ballots that are counted digitally are great because you have a hard to tamper with artifact (it's a lot harder to forge a bunch of paper ballots and put them in then to hack a database) for recounts/audits.
@blogdiva In the UK paper ballots *are* identifiable. But only for a short period of time with a court order, which essentially never happens.
(The scenario is that you turn up to vote, and get told that you can't vote because you've already voted. If your one vote would have made a difference to the result the stolen ballot can, in theory, be retrieved and examined.)
