Things have changed on both sides of the wall a lot.
That's not to say that it's impossible, but it is not "just" removing the wall. Things like reactions, stickers, history catchup, end-to-end encryption, calls and all that has evolved a lot in the past 10 years in the XMPP world. Google and Facebook have not participated in the standards process, so we can be 100% sure that they're using different, incompatible wire protocols.
