today (5th February 2026), the New START Treaty expires. That removes numerical constraints on America and Russia limiting the numbers of their nuclear warheads and delivery platforms.

The end of ‘trust but verify’ Détente between the major nuclear powers also means an increased risk that other countries will begin/resume developing nuclear weapons.

And why not – they can point to the example of Ukraine, which gave up its nukes in 1994 for security guarantees from USA, UK and Russia, which were useless when Putin invaded in 2014, and 2022.
