The billionaire media is laying off great tech journalists in crazy quantities this year - replacing them with AI and sycophants. This would be a great time to throw some dollars, euros, pounds, or dollarydoos to @flipboard.com/@404media, @ProPublica or another independent outlet.
@hacks4pancakes I'm trying not to get depressed about the state of journalism because independent media is doing a great job these days picking up the slack.
@jkirk @hacks4pancakes True, but it's very much a generational problem.
Many have no real Idea this even exists and/or still rely on only TV news and classical newspapers.
I have no clue to resolve this other than just waiting ... but that can't be the solution. I'm telling my mum, I've installed her an easy to use RSS reader on her tablet, but whatever I do and talk, she's glued to the TV news every evening and not looking elsewhere. *edit:typo

@waldschnecke @jkirk @hacks4pancakes

Keep working on her.

I'm 72, retired computer programmer, and I read Wired and 404Media

@hacks4pancakes
@propublicaguild is very close to going on strike because @ProPublica won't agree to worker demands regarding AI.
It's a serious bummer.
On the plus side, I just heard of @propublicaguild in this post and am thrilled to see there's such a well organized union at @ProPublica. That makes me feel better, not worse, about my subscription. :)
@ohmu @hacks4pancakes
@brekke
I feel very much the same.
So far @propublicaguild has mainly asked supporters to sign petitions and send messages of support to
@ProPublica. Keep reading! Keep subscribing!
@ohmu @brekke @propublicaguild @ProPublica they are taking donations for a strike fund now too.
@ohmu @hacks4pancakes @ProPublica @propublicaguild hmmm. One of the best cyber journalists there ever was took a great gig at ProPublica and is leaving after I think less than two years.
@metacurity
I've noticed that seems to be the tenure.
I hope you will keep reading PP, though.
The guild has asked supporters to please keep reading and keep subscribing.

@ProPublica @hacks4pancakes

If you're far from the front lines and wondering how you can possibly help to make a real impact against fascism, this is a big one. ā˜ļø Independent media is a requirement of a functional democracy.

Satire plays an important role too. I support @TheBeaverton in Canada, they rock.

@hacks4pancakes @[email protected] I completely agree. I have supported ProPublica for years. I just wish cancelling my subscription *mostly because my circumstances have changed* weren't so hard. All the money I save not subscribing to D+, P+, all the pluses, I've reinvested into actual journalism.

@hacks4pancakes @ProPublica But we have to talk paywalls. We cannot possible buy our way through to all interesting content. I would contribute to some media, perhaps, which would let readers to access the content, even without collecting personal information, share it into Fediverse, etc.

Internet was built about idea of publicly available content and the paywalls destroyed much of it. Yes, the Xitter, AI, and everything is making things worse. Buy paywalls and targeted advertising accelerated and enabled this trend...

@hacks4pancakes @molly0xfff out here doing the lords work too. She stares straight into the fire and reports what she sees.
@hacks4pancakes
If AI is dominating this rapidly to an extent of replacing humans in all sectors, how will people liberate themselves the day AI completely enslaved humans?
ZERO DAY

Hackers, spies and the intersection between cybersecurity and national security

ZERO DAY

@hacks4pancakes @ProPublica

Done and done, several times over.
Now that my WaPo subscription is long dead I can do so.

@hacks4pancakes
I hear that Bitcoin is cheap nowadays.
