Hey, #Ring doorbell users... see below.
@ai6yr We talked about that possibility a few months ago. Deleted the apps and let it die in the cold.
@tend2wobble (clap clap clap) Yay!
@ai6yr Or invest in an isolated camera system with a local hub and storage setup. No wifi. No cloud! No subscription!!

@vbeyette Are there suggestions for someone who would be interested in this?

@ai6yr

@rmq I've heard Frigate with pretty much any IP camera is a good setup, and easier to user than Zoneminder.

@vbeyette @ai6yr

@vbeyette @ai6yr
I am using a reolink camera, but Internet access from this device is blocked on my router, so I can use the app whilst In the same network.
For remote a VPN would work or I can access the stream via the home assistant integration over the manu casa cloud integration.

@vbeyette

This response alone explains why Fedi is so much better than commercial SM.

Reolinks are probably the least anti-consumer camera company out there right now

Works with Home assistant certified. RTSP stream, once enabled in the app or desktop software, can be used anywhere else without needing the app at all. Also comes in POE & battery (battery model doesn't do a RTSP stream for energy savings, so I'd steer clear of it specifically unless it's not in your use case)

@ai6yr that's what you get for a country that has no sense of privacy. Film on your own property whatever you want, but not an inch further.
@ai6yr This was always the idea...

@ai6yr

#Ring

OR switch to a wired NVR NON-Ring camera like Reolink

@ai6yr

We have Ubiquiti at our house, doorbell and driveway. Local recording, nothing in the cloud. Viewing my footage will require a search warrant.

@ai6yr by the way, if you have neighbors with Rings, you can make them non functional with a quick dab of acetone or hydrofluoric acid on the lens, depending on if they're plastic or glass lenses.
@ai6yr @the_turtle I think it's likely that doing this will make your neighbors assume their house is being cased for burglary, which will likely cause them to double up on their security system.

@pencilears @ai6yr I'll wear a trump costume.

No one will suspect a thing.

@ai6yr @the_turtle

Ahh, you are Fed Posting. I see.

@pencilears @ai6yr well, yeah, if I posted that over on twitter they'd say I was being disrespectful.
@ai6yr @inthehands Nice non-confrontational way to ask neighbors to turn off ring video
@ai6yr
Oh man I want to give something like this to my neighbors. I live in an apartment building and several people on my floor have these cameras where I have to walk directly past them multiple times per day. I hate it so much.
@ai6yr Source?
Ring cameras are about to get increasingly chummy with law enforcement

Amazon's Ring partners with company whose tech has reportedly been used by ICE.

@ai6yr our landlords own the camera, so, as we can't remove or destroy it? it's just not allowed on the Internet.
@pencilears Piece of masking tape over the camera lens works!
@ai6yr I don't want the landlords (or anyone who might report back to them) to be able to see that it's not operational
@ai6yr Secret audio surveillance is a criminal offense in Germany.

@padeluun

I am not trying to be facetious. But is Germany not affected by the UK law that just passed which makes it legal for their law enforcement to arbitrarily spy on any and every messaging system? It also made it against the law to try to prevent them from spying on messaging?

ICE, because they are considered part of Homeland Security, is given way to much authority to do what would be illegal for many other US Law Enforcement to do. This is because of an over zealous ACT we passed to protect us after 911. I believe it was called the Patriots ACT. They always name this legislation after something that sounds noble, even when it is the opposite.
