Washington Post cuts a third of its staff

The Washington Post has laid off one-third of its staff, eliminating its sports section, several foreign bureaus and its books coverage. The widespread purge announced Wednesday is a brutal blow to journalism and one of its most legendary brands. The Post’s executive editor, Matt Murray, called the move painful but necessary to put the outlet on stronger footing and weather changes in technology and user habits. He outlined the changes in a companywide online meeting. Staff members then began getting emails with one of two subject lines — telling them their role was or was not eliminated. Rumors of layoffs had circulated for weeks.

The Post’s troubles stand in contrast to its longtime competitor The New York Times, which has been thriving in recent years, in large part due to investments in ancillary products like its Games site & Wirecutter product recommendations. The Times has doubled its staff over the past decade.

Destroying access to information means denying access to knowledge. People are easy to control and influence when they're ignorant and have no idea of how bad they're being enslaved. We need to to open the eyes of people but how do we do it?

It's really a hard one question but I believe there's a way out. The system was designed to keep us distracted. When people focus on sports, entertainment, becoming successful and working hard to survive, it becomes hard for them to know the cycle in which we're trapped. Right from the start. Children are taught to obey instead of question and it rewards those obey orders and instructions unlike and punished those who think and find their own ways.
