Why We Went Looking for National Defense Areas Along the U.S. Southern Border - sh.itjust.works

Our reporting started, like much of our work, in a spreadsheet. As I parsed through federal court data, I noticed something odd: Within months of President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, prosecutors began filing obscure charges related to trespassing on military property — so many, in fact, that more cases were filed in 2025 than in the prior decade. Nearly all of these charges originated from cases along the U.S. southern border, where last spring, the White House designated large swaths of land as national defense areas. Putting them under military authority allowed troops to play an unprecedented role in apprehending undocumented immigrants; federal soldiers are generally barred from enforcing the law on domestic soil. If you were caught in one of these zones, the government could also now prosecute you for breaking federal laws, including one enacted in 1909 to keep spies away from arsenals.

How Russian spies recruit, pressure and run their informants - sh.itjust.works

Just before New Year’s Eve 2024, as many Russians were calling family and friends with holiday wishes, a 21-year-old computer science student living in Moscow received a very different kind of greeting. “Fate keeps steering you away, from criminal persecution, from the army. I hope everything works out for you,” the caller said. The well-wishes then took a darker turn: “Don’t forget your homeland. And share more information.” The student — who we have agreed to call Ivan because of fears for his safety — felt intimidated, but not surprised. Throughout the previous year he’d been harassed by the same man and his colleague, both Russian intelligence officers. It had begun 16 months earlier, after Ivan had been detained by them and offered a deal: Inform on his acquaintances in anti-Kremlin circles, many of whom had fled abroad, or go to prison.

Why corn tortillas in California now must contain folic acid and why more states may do the same

Why corn tortillas in California now must contain folic acid and why more states may do the same - sh.itjust.works

Fifteen years after she lost her first baby to a rare and devastating birth defect, Andrea Lopez takes comfort in knowing that other Latina mothers might finally avoid the same pain. In January, California became the first state to require food makers to add folic acid, a crucial vitamin, to corn masa flour used to make tortillas and other traditional foods widely used in her community. It’s a long-delayed move aimed at reducing Hispanic infants’ disproportionately high rates of serious conditions called neural tube defects, which claimed Lopez’s son, Gabriel Cude, when he was 10 days old.

Federal trial over AC in Texas prisons set to start Monday

Federal trial over AC in Texas prisons set to start Monday - sh.itjust.works

The proceeding comes over a year after U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman said in a groundbreaking, 91-page ruling that housing Texas prison inmates in sweltering facilities that lack air conditioning is “plainly unconstitutional.” Pitman declined last March to order the Texas Department of Justice to immediately install temporary or permanent air conditioning, instead forcing the plaintiffs to move towards a trial. At the time of the initial ruling, Marci Marie Simmons, who was previously incarcerated and is among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, called the decision a win and said she hopes it pushes state lawmakers to fund prison air conditioning. “This is a federal judge saying Texas is unconstitutionally housing people in these dangerous and deadly temperatures,” Simmons said. “I cried. I cried for my people on the inside.”

Faith Kates: the woman who introduced models to ‘dear friend’ Jeffrey Epstein

Faith Kates: the woman who introduced models to ‘dear friend’ Jeffrey Epstein - sh.itjust.works

A female executive at the top of the modelling industry had a close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and introduced him to women on the agency’s books, a Guardian investigation has found. Until last November, Faith Kates ran Next Management modelling and talent agency, which has represented the likes of Alexa Chung, Milla Jovovich and Billie Eilish, a position she held for decades as the founder of the business. She stepped down quietly just weeks before the first major Epstein files were released, saying she intended to focus on charity work. Links between Kates and the late sex offender have previously been reported, but analysis of documents published by the US Department of Justice reveals a much deeper relationship than previously known, with emails showing Kates secretly took business advice from Epstein and discussed multimillion-dollar loans.
