They just heavily gassed. Went thru my full face again. the medics were saying it was going through their masks too. There were very young children present. This is the road nearby ten minutes after the gassing started. The gas is still visible as I type this. Crowd regroup and energy is high. β€œKilling in the name of” now playing on loud speaker. @alissaazar that's a gas canister gun. It won't kill you, but the irritant is capsaicin based. I grow extreme chilly peppers. And we're talking reapers. The secret is to drink milk, and keep a carton handy to wash out the eyes. Lactose breaks down capsaicin from pepper spray and gas canisters. You can't wear face coverings at protests UNLESS it for medical reasons, and an N95 mask minimizes capsaicin inhalation. Also don't touch your genitals. It hurts like a motherfucker. Ask me how I know.
@praetor @alissaazar
Don't rinse your eyes with milk This is bad advice that somehow keeps limping along.
@TheGreatLlama @alissaazar kinda. You shouldn't just put milk in your eyes for no damned reason because of bacteria, but at a protest where we're talking substances with several million SHU of capsaicin it's better than nothing. I have to wear gloves to handle my reapers, and I've gotten it in my eyes, and the milk does help alleviate that.
@praetor @alissaazar
I've read advice over and over from medical professionals that specifically say NOT to use milk.
@TheGreatLlama @alissaazar doctors are not pepper growers now are they? Do you want to be temporarily blinded at a protest by listening to doctor or do you want keep fighting and listen to a pepper grower who is telling you to put the damned milk in your eyes? There ya go. Aint gonna argue with stupidity.

@praetor @alissaazar
I've specifically heard this from doctors who provide aid at protests. I've also known plenty of doctors who are gardeners.

Do what you like for your own part, I just felt it was better to counteract unsafe health advice. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ Personally, I'll stick with water and avoid the infection.

@praetor @alissaazar
Just going to drop this in the discussion. A very effective 3d printed water bottle adapter, specifically designed for flushing out tear gas, etc.

Since the air in a few US cities is getting spicy again, it's probably worth linking these... https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4429528 I'm not affiliated with the designer but I work in dusty environments. The designer came up with these during the George Floyd protests and I haven't found anything better. It's designed to go on top of a water bottle that you then squeeze and it fires jets of water from the outside edges and then diverts the water away. The idea is that it flushes the irritants AWAY from your tear ducts and out. It's worth trying out BEFORE you need it to understand how it works, but once you've done it, I can tell you from experience that you can use it without help without being able to see.

@TheGreatLlama @alissaazar Absolutely. This is a much better thing. You need either something that can aggressively flush it (because capsacin is a bitch to remove), like this, or aggressively neutralize, like milk. Aggressively flush is always a better thing. But if you can't aggressively flush, you need to aggressively neutralize. And in a chaotic place like a protest, if you can't flush, neutralizing is worth the risk.
@TheGreatLlama @alissaazar If I accidentally get it in my eyes, I don't milk. I lay down in the bath tub, with my face under the facet, up close to it and flush it. I do use milk for the more...tender places, because it neutralizes it really quickly. But, on a protest field do you have a bath tub? Can you carry a sink with you? No. So this is a better option, but if you don't have this, then milk is your second best option. $2, can carry it in your bag. There ya go.
