Thread with @fosdem #FOSDEM 2026 (Day 1) sketch notes!

Mastodon Android client still has no multi-toot feature so... spam incoming! 😁

⬇️⬇️⬇️

Started at the main #FOSDEM track with "FOSS in times of war, scarcity, and (adversarial) AI" by @michiel
Stayed at the #FOSDEM main track for "Evolving Git" by Patrick Steinhardt:
And even more #FOSDEM main track, another VCS that still has a warm place in my heart: "Mercurial, 20 years and counting", by Raphaël Gomès and Pierre-Yves David.

After that a @calyxos related #FOSDEM talk by Aysha and @grote about "HSM based signing for AOSP projects".

Fast paced, info dense... hope my doodles are correct (enough) πŸ˜…

Next at #FOSDEM I got to take it easy as I'd done my sketches beforehand (per one of the speaker's request). So had time to fully listen to Fabio Giovanazzi and @flypig talk about "NewPipe and SailPipe".
After that #FOSDEM continued for me with a showcase by Effie Mouzeli on Wikipedia's "Bare Metal, OSS, and some Caching".
Next at #FOSDEM second main track, @mikemcquaid gave a "Lessons Learned" recap of what happend around RubyGems past fall.
Then a ClickHouse-related talk on "Inverted Indexes" by Robert Schulze. #FOSDEM
Bit of Python next at #FOSDEM: a talk by @malemburg about "Python, DuckDB, and ETL".
Stayed in the Python room for a talk by @EmmaDelescolle about the potential future of Django Admin and related alternatives. #FOSDEM

Closing off @fosdem / #FOSDEM 2026 day 1 at the "Quiz", while finishing up my sketch notes.

Thanks for reading along! Day 2 will get a fresh thread. 😊 See y'all on Sunday!

EDIT: Day 2 thread available at https://mastodon.social/@jeroenheijmans/115994945759068928

@jeroenheijmans Do you make these on request for recorded talks too?
Asking for a friend 😜

@boegel Hah 😊 appreciate the perceived implicit compliment πŸ˜…

This started as (and mostly still is) a way to better absorb presented content for me personally. But feel free to suggest a recording link πŸ˜‰ - no promises though, this is certainly not my day job 😁

@jeroenheijmans Nice overview, and definitely an interesting talk.

@jeroenheijmans Thanks so much again, your art really made the talk! And it was lovely to meet you in person afterwards.

My task now is to go through all of the sketches you made of other talks to decide which ones I want to watch in full!

@flypig cheers, and likewise! 😁
The recording of the #FOSDEM presentation Aysha and I did about @calyxos HSM signing is now live: https://video.fosdem.org/2026/ub4132/AV8MA9-open-source-hsm-based-aosp-signing.av1.webm
@grote
Thanks for the talk. Does the YubHSM support the sharding or do You have to export the key and then do the sharding on the (offline) machine?
@calyxos
@pink
Unfortunately, sharding on that HSM isn't supported by its firmware, so like its official setup utility, we have to hold the key in memory, shard it and then import it back into the HSM. This is undesirable of course, but we took the opportunity to deploy the same key to more than one HSM for backup reasons.
@calyxos
@jeroenheijmans Do you mind if we add your awesome drawing to our blog post on the topic?
@grote Heya, that sounds cool! The drawings have a base CC-BY-SA-4.0 license subtly in the bottom-right corner which should allow for that use case! If this specific license doesn't work, let me know?
