@royaards love it!

edit: the art, not the situation :P

@royaards check out Vivaldi we have a way to help away from Big tech !

@anneviv

I watched your toot with the Vivaldi browser.
Thanks for doing the work.

@royaards

@anneviv @royaards to be fair, in the end it's a chromium(Google) based browser.
So if you are using Vivaldi, you're still somewhat relying on big techs work.

@sinandlerd @anneviv @royaards

That's OK. Just don't give them any money.

@LevZadov @anneviv @royaards money is not really the problem. It's all about dependencies.

@sinandlerd @LevZadov @anneviv @royaards There is always some sort of "So if you are using XY, you're still somewhat relying on big techs work." Even if you got only opensource Software, there's still Hardware ...)

But please, let people take one step at a time! It's a process, not a sprint.

@Lock @LevZadov @anneviv @royaards true. I am happy to see that more and more people want to get rid of big techs products and services. My intention was to show, that some alternatives that claim to be a big tech free solution just aren't.
There's still a lot potential left for a better product/solution. ;-)

@sinandlerd @LevZadov @anneviv @royaards you're right, it is just important to focus on the way of thinking, not in a specific product. I just think, that people need at least something to hold in to. If the direct answer to "chromium is Vetter than chrome" is "chrome is Bad, too", it gets hard for people are just starting their journey.

Sadly, big tech is nearly everywhere 🀷

@sinandlerd
Ah by that standard nearly all the world is using Linux phones.

Vivaldi uses the oss base of Chrome.

Personally I think people are still missing the point, there is a reason why the browser market is as restricted as it is: DRM.

In practice Microsoft, Apple & Google effectively control who is allowed to publish a mass market compatible browser, by granting or not a DRM module licence (they just need to delay it).
@anneviv @royaards

@yacc143 @anneviv @royaards That's true.
All your mentioned points are valid. But imagine google would own 'Linux', would you build on that and say your product helps to get away from big tech?
I understand that it's a journey and for most people it's hard to get out of the big tech comfort zone. My goal is not to badmouth someone's work, who is trying to make a difference. Nevertheless, I don't think it's right to conceal the dependencies that come with it. This means that chromium browsers will never work without Google. Development would also probably never continue without Google. Ultimately, a chromium browser can only ever be an intermediate step at best.

@sinandlerd @anneviv @royaards Ah, but that's the point; Google only owns Chromium up to a point.

In the end it's a question of how the US trade envoy will be able to enforce the US idea of "fair trade" aka US tech monopoly, or the EU will manage to enforce their digital tech laws. In that the next couple of years will be interesting, as in the Chinese curse.

Note that how Google manages Chrome is already not DSA/DMA compliant, e.g. the whole enterprise addon ecosystem.

@yacc143 @anneviv @royaards If google stops working on chromium there's no one who will have the ability to compensate for that. It's a matter of manpower and also money. By the way, Vivaldi is also relying on ads and user data.

I hope for the EU as well. But I don't think we have so much time left for the EU to find their courage to stand up for our values.

@royaards
Looks like the EU just needs more bicycles!

@kenjen @royaards

Italy is the tops for beautiful frames.

@kenjen @royaards Or just step out of the car and walk for a bit. Because, in fact, we don't have to go very far at all. We're nearly there anyway.

There hasn't been a better time to break free. We've got more viable alternatives than we've had in the last twenty or so years. Just start using them

@royaards
we start to have some alternatives, just little bit will power and psychology to start to using them.

https://european-alternatives.eu/alternatives-to

but i'm little annoyed that there is no easy alternative to smartphone duopoly, in this case android and ios. we need to remove google account and aplpe id in our systems and devices.

European Alternatives
@royaards yea the best time to rip off the bandage was yesterday, the second-best time is today. We have a surplus of comp sci PhDs, coming to us as refugees from the US ... we need to create more jobs anyway. And that's after we already brain-drained the decent/sane people out of Russia.
@royaards I'll repeat it "until the day I'll die" .. there's been times I was shouting "We should NOT .. " and NOBODY WAS LISTENING AND I WAS A FOOL ... NOW LOOK where we are ! "TOLD YOU SO!" .. 😐
This is a brilliant visual representation of the current situation - I cannot tell if the driver is (irrationally) blaming Trump for getting stuck, or whether he correctly identifies the problem as being chained to American big tech. I struggle to make the same distinction when looking at Brussels. @royaards
@royaards I like to imagine solarpunks/etc picknicking with their bikes just in the top left outside of the frame. ;)
@royaards Jabba has strange hair.
