@nex Thank you for writing this (very deep dive) down. I've met such an odd response to Cloudflare blog in Matrix chat for matrix.org donors (even insulting to existing contributors to the Matrix ecosystem for being "mad" at Cloudflare for releasing this dumpster fire) by some other Matrix donors that it kinda caught me off guard.
Cloudflare doesn't care about Matrix, they wanted to put out marketing material based on Matrix name for SEO, while putting almost no effort into the thing they've made, releasing something incredibly irresponsible, insulting and quite frankly damaging for Cloudflare brand itself.
I kinda do understand the response from Matthew trying to make the best out of the situation and invite Cloudflare for funding, considering tight situation of foundation and them still looking for funding. But I also agree with you on your points how it came off and that Cloudflare is not a friend of Matrix mission and their work in centralizing web is antithetical to Matrix Manifesto.
Cloudflare should be ostracized for their blog post and carelessness of putting this "prototype" which they called "production ready" on initial release.
Tech needs responsibility and ethics. Cloudflare, like so many companies recently showed none of those in this situation.
@nex Thanks for writing this. It included quite a few details that I'd missed initially.
As for the Matrix.org blogpost - I'm disappointed, but I can't say I'm surprised. The Foundation has had several opportunities over the years to choose between "high-capital centralized development" and "low-capital community-engaged development", and they've consistently chosen the former despite all the evidence suggesting that it'll never be sustainable. This choice unfortunately seems in line with that.
